smallblock,
It's a variation on the same problem most people have, just a different form. Decide what you can do without, without much inconvenience, figure out how to mechanically 'bolt' the thing in that spot, and then start making holes and routing cables.
Simple, ain't it?
Yeah, right! Having gone through the same thing recently with a new car, about the only 'easy' thing about it is making a wrong guess about what's 'best' for you. It's a, "Wonder why I didn't think of that before I did it?" thingy. The "except's" are the things that bite you. As in, that's a great place, except the sun shines on the display and I can't see the @#$ thing! Or, that's perfect, except where I always bump my knee on the @#$ thing and it's ripped all my britches. There are a huge number of those 'except's I never thought of before. @#$!
It would be nice if someone could tell you the absolute best place to put a radio in your 'new' truck, but don't hold your breath too long. What would be 'best' for me, may not be 'best' for you.
Good luck!

(If the worst radio manufacturer in the world made a radio with a detachable control head they'd make a fortune!)
