Im looking to purchase a good power supply. Something around 35 amps. What are some good brand names to look at ? And what are the ones to stay away from ?.

Astron is expensive but perhaps the best. They work well under rf loads no problem.

Pyramid is a cheap power supply,,,that has trouble under loads, and they seem to only last a few years,,,Astron won't fail under loads, cost more than the Pyramid,,but 4-5 times a better unit,,,at least!!

I can highly recommend the MFJ 4245 switching power supply.

45 amp peek 40 amp continuous.
Super light weight.
Super clean, no RF hash in RX or TX.

Variable voltage.

All around excellent PS for the money. ( new $199.95 )

I have an astron 35 amp works great I bought it used and the only thing that broke was the meter on it but the amp still works.get the astron they last.

Ive had alot of switching power supplies, and always no matter what I do get tons of noise. Ive moved them, braided the pos/neg wires, chokes, moved the cords to different rooms, no matter what brand I use I always get noise...............whats your secret DX_949?

Does that mean you can change the voltage or what?

A switching-mode power supply is a power supply that provides the power supply function through low loss components such as capacitors, inductors, and transformers -- and the use of switches that are in one of two states, on or off. The advantage is that the switch dissipates very little power in either of these two states and power conversion can be accomplished with minimal power loss, which equates to high efficiency. The term switchmode was widely used for this type of power supply until Motorola, Inc., who used the trademark SWITCHMODE TM for products aimed at the switching-mode power supply market, started to enforce their trademark. Then more generic terms had to be found. I started using the term switching-mode power supply to avoid infringing on the trademark. Others used the term switching power supply, which seems to be the more popular term. PSMA does not define either switching-mode power supply or switching power supply, but does define switching regulator.

A day late and dollar short to get to this thread, but I'll also plug Samlex for anyone who might search this out in the future. Astron and Samlex are the way to go in my honest opinion. Well worth every $$ spent.

There's no sense buying a big radio, and then go with a cheap power supply that will induce noise into your signal.

I've got a Samlex sitting here that's done a damn good job with everything I've thrown at it.
