As far as SSB goes I roll on 36 or 38 mostly. Using 970 call numbers something like weakest walkie talkie in the rockies or just 970 in the rockies.

If you have set up correctly, RX,& TX performance should be exactly the same on USB and LSB.
A lot of 11meter band DXers in the UK drive to elivated locations and set up a mobile static stations, normally using a 5/8 wave vertical to work the skip.
They make an all day field trip of it , particually at this time of the year. Normally June ,July , August, Is when the skip is running
strongest in Northern Europe, and the weather is warm. Alot of these well known high locations have beautiful views worth the
drive alone. Makes a lot of sense persuing your hobby and getting out and about absorbing the great outdoors. :icon_e_smile:
Thats exactly what I've been doing, I pack up my truck and head to the mountains/hills and just spend the day enjoying time away from the sea level slog life. we have a network of probally 10 guys within the willamette valley, do a lil rag chew or take turns catching a dx station. now since i've been on again I met a lotta cool folks here on the ssb. even in the lousy weather it's fun to get out and perch up in woods on a nice high spur with a view and make lots of good contacts. just tune in and be patient SSB is still alive.

I guess this officially qualifies as a sidebar to keep sideband alive.

On the orignal topic, CB is one of the few bands where sideband is considered antiquated. On the Ham bands AM is the exception. Sideband is after all more efficient. But AM just sounds so much better.

For the record I love old posts.

I am ssb for life! I just got back on the radio as of tonight for the first time in about 7-8 years and I am getting a ssb radio in about 2-3 weeks! I am going nuts floating around on am with nothing going on and no one to chat it up with. I hope some good skip rolls in as soon as I get whatever radio I decide to buy!

Most of the locals around around Vancouver BC, and here on Vancouver Island BC sit on lower 38 as our local frequency. It's where we all ragchew till the skip rolls on it. When the skips a rollin, I go AM, as i like the sound, and my tube gear can make some noize. But for the loooong DX...lower 38.

I enjoy talking on sibeband i am usually on 37 lsb and 38 lsb . SSB seems to be a bit more talkable during heavy dx conditions and the operators are more professional in there operating habbits. AM can be a mad house at times full of rood obnoxious operators who have no respect for the hobby. I will be listening for the call numbers of the people on this forum maybe we can have a chat.73s

Since getting my 148gtl I have been living on 38 and 39 lsb. I never really spent much time on AM over the years, only to chat with my one buddy who is local and we usually talked on 37lsb.

I've been wondering if we could agree to CBRadioTalk "meetup" SSB channel..

I was thinking something obscure, but still in the standard 40, like 31USB or something..

The only difference between USB and LSB is which carrier gets suppressed the upper one or the lower one. There is essentially no propagation difference in using LSB versus USB on a given freq. LSB is just the tradition, but there is no reason we couldn't break the tradition.

I am down for a while, but I think a standard CBRT SSB freq would be a great idea. It would make it easier for people to get tuned up by being able to get online and see who is on and try and get some LD DX going... :joker:

With a good sideband radio it can sound as good or better than am. I have been using this same old 148GTL since I bought it new back around 79 or 80, can't remember exactly when I got it. Only time I use it on am is if I want to talk to the truckers or one of my buds that hasn't gotten a ssb rig yet. I only do dx on ssb. Found out the mud ducks run L36 and U37 and if you can get them on U37 at 8 pm there time (PA.) you can get a mud duck number, heard that from mud duck 424 when I talked with him on L36 the other day.
If you want to talk long distance local or dx SSB is the way to go. WDX 617 on the side.

Posted up here in VA hope to hear some of y'all out there I've mostly just been listening on AM as I haven't quite gotten SSB figured out yet. Anyway, if anyone on here is in VA let me know what SSB channels you're operating on would be cool to try and make some contacts. -Blackhawk 4302

I do my part when the conditions are right. I get on the traditional SSB channels and give a shout out whenever the conditions are right. If L38 is busy I go on either 36,39,40, or 16 LSB and shout out. Almost everytime someone will come right back to me. Those are the channels that have always been agreed to be for SSB. I was off the air for several years but don't see any need to let those channels go over to the dark side (am), lets keep them active. If you here 38 hopping don't sit there, go to one of the others and you will probably get a quick come back and I don't use power, just my little cobra 148GL.

This thread has been going for something like 8 months, so that ought to be enough time to draw a few conclusions from it. It also raises a questions in my mind!
What makes anyone thing SSB is dying, in danger of dying, or is even remotely ill?
How about, 'AM' audio sounds better than SSB audio. It's the same audio, how/why would it sound differently except by not adjusting the receiver correctly?
How about a 2 watt dead key and 100 watts of swing? Wow, that's typically called a 'vestigial' carrier, just another form of side band, double side band (DSB).

I once had a suppresed carrier walkie talkie years and years ago, it could get out up to twenty miles talking to mobiles that were up in the mountains. I was in Madera and they were up at Oak Hurst.

I was out of ssb for nearly 25 years until one day I got bored and decided to clean my closet out and low and behold I came across my Sbe console V in a box along with my Sbe desk mic. And my old Thunderbolt-101 but my antenna was long gone(PDL-2).So I went on-line and found another antenna and yep you guess right I was back on the air!! But now theres another problem- seems like I'm the only one around here any more that has a ssb base set-up. There is another fellow in my area whom I've made contact with but he's a "hammer" but only uses 11meters when the band is open which right now is not that often in this area.Back in the day(1980'sto early 1990's) There were alot of ssb'ers in this area but things were getting to political and people had hard feelings towards one another thats when I said "screw it" and packed and sold things a-way.Now after nearly 25 years I'm back!! Now I'm hoping if my fellow ssb'ers are reading this in my area will blow the dust off there rigs put there antenna up and get back on the air!! Don't be hiding in the weeds!!! I've now semi-retired my Sbe console V. and now run a RCI-2980 so come on guys get them radios going in S.E. Minnesota!!! Mn."BANDIT-3"

Dusty Roads here ...
I live in Carrollton Tx, just north of Dallas. Like alot of you, Iv'e got back on the air after houses, cars, kids, etc ... So I dragged out the old 89GTL and the HiGain and I'm back ... Whoa!-What happened? Where is everybody? Anyway, AM is quiet as a grave here, so I found a very nice stock MB8719 Washington on EBay - She's a beauty ... came with original box, owners manual, schematic, warranty card, even the old CB license application. Heck, the origional mike was still in a plastic bag!
Anyway ...
Rain/ice/snow killed the HiGain two weeks ago, so I just put up a new Imax 2000 ... Sweet!
There is some traffic on 30-40LSB, but not as much as I'd hoped ... So no contacts yet.
BUT ... I'm out there ...
So Give me a shout - Dusty Roads KLT8598 ...

Welcome back Dusty Roads, yeah it is like a ghost town on the radio compared to the old days. I have no locals around here, just truckers that are mostly about 12 to 20 miles away that I sometimes get to talk with if they need some directions or need to report a problem.
I check out the sideband channels for long contacts whenever I can hear the skip is starting to run on 19, hope to get a SSB into the hands of a friend soon that lives about 40 miles away to have someone to talk with. I run the old 148 and have gotten a few off of ebay to get one working well to pass on for someone to talk with. Pretty weird to be the only base station in what I have scoped out so far as a 50 mile radius, probably a larger radius than that.
WDX 617 on L38 or one near that if it is jammed with traffic.

I feel your pain guys! Was cleaning out the basement and came across a box that had not been opened since only God knows. Inside I found my old Cobra 138 XLR and Turner Road King 60-J. (glad I have the stock mike as I am still trying to track down a battery for it!! 7V mercury still in it!) All that was left after selling off radios back in the 80's. First I wondered if it worked, then wondered if anyone still uses a CB! This radio was from 1978 so I have been told. Probably the last one I purchased. Unfortunately no power cord and no antenna. I actually remember where the antenna first sat for 10+ years before I threw it out more than 12 years ago when I moved. Well, like a kid on Christmas I just couldn't wait to find out. Ran over to the local Radio Shack and found the last mobile magnet mount antenna they had (piece of junk) and a power cord that must have been on the rack for 20 years! (package was almost yellow!!) Came home and fired it up. At first I thought it was shot as I couldn't hear anyone, then low and behold a voice....! Asked for a radio check and was surprised to hear a response. A base station nearly 12 miles away. It worked! Well went on line, found this forum and researched antennas. Bought a Wilson 1000, an SWR meeter, and paid $25 extra shipping costs for 2nd day air! Just had to have it yesterday you know... Waited until I received the new antenna and meter before trying SSB...it worked also..and apparently on frequency. Made a few contacts on 38L last weekend..but boy is it quiet compared to 30 years ago! Received a response from a member here in NJ that is on SSB and am planning to attend a flea market and luncheon in March here in NJ. Researched base antennas and will be putting up a I-Max shortly. For now I must look like a fool in the neighborhood sitting in the driveway in my Expedition talking on the radio. And has it ever been cold up here! Yes, let's keep SSB alive..
