Re: popular SSB channel
L38 seems to be the only channel they want to use. Even when it is totally full to where you can't even begin to pick out one over another they just crowd in on the one channel. A few times when it has been packed I called out on L39 or L37 and have made some contacts but that is rare. Lately at least I have made some calls on L38 and then we slid down 5kc so we were in the clear and held a good QSO.
Unless you find some locals that hang out somewhere else then L38 would be the place to make SSB contact. In PA there is a mud duck group and they make contact on U37 at either 7 or 8 pm. Since I talked with one of them on a Sunday I have never been able to get any skip going up that way during the night.
Happy hunting on your dx contacts.

Re: popular SSB channel
Try channel 38 LSB. Most of your sideband traffic is going to be channel 35 through 40. I have been told that Channel 16 is supposed to be a sideband channel, but as far as I'm concerned, 35 and up is where the most traffic is.

I think my last contact was either sat or sun and only did two. One was in FL 477 Allen out of Palm Beach and one from New York 427 Keith, for both of these we did the slide down for clear contact.
If you ever hear 477 he must have some kind of fancy mic system, it was crystal clear and sounded unique.

38L will become a real mess when the solar flux gets high. SSB is especially problematic for traffic as there is no carrier to wipe out other signals..
Check the shoutbox, if I'm around, I'll be always will to try a QSO on a less crowded channel. I've proposed something like 32U, or something equally esoteric, so we will have it relatively to ourselves.
I'm even willing to listen out for freeband traffic and note what I hear on the board, if someone wants to shout there.

What frequency's are free band? Is it legal to use them or is it something the FCC just does not look into too much?goofy wrote:38L will become a real mess when the solar flux gets high. SSB is especially problematic for traffic as there is no carrier to wipe out other signals..

Re: popular SSB channel
Is it posible to scan on SSB with a regular scanner to find out what the popular channels are in your area? Maybe a radio that can scan on SSB. Will a 2950DX do that?

Yes and No.240bravo wrote:Is it posible to scan on SSB with a regular scanner to find out what the popular channels are in your area? Maybe a radio that can scan on SSB. Will a 2950DX do that?
What you're looking for is called a receiver, not a scanner. Most commercial "scanners" that I know of don't have SSB and are just meant to scan through a set range of frequencies, like your local FD(thus the name "scanner"). Alinco and AOR are the main manufacturers of "receivers", these are meant to be tuned to a specific frequency that is to be monitored continuously and have a lot more features than normal "scanners", one of those features being SSB monitoring. If you have a shortwave radio, many of the newer ones cover all the way up to 30mhz with SSB.
As for a 2950DX, it has SSB so it can monitor it, but I don't know if it has a scan feature.

Re: popular SSB channel
Thanks Bobcb. I went to the alinco websight and saw what you were talking about. Good information, I didn't know there was a difference between scanners and receivers. More toys to spend money on.
