out of all the radio techs on the board, who is most familiar with the DX88 radio? my brother traded a radio with me and im getting a DX88 that is limping, but i wanted the radio. some golden screwdriver installed the RFX75 and the radio is only doing about 40 watts. we all know the 88 will do that with the factory dual finals. i would think that it would be doing at least double that.

i will be looking for someone to send the radio to for some repair work. how easy would it be to remove the RFX and just install dual MOSFETS in the radio? maybe we could work a partial deal with the RFX unit if it is not damaged. they are going for about 40 bucks new, id let who ever worked on the radio keep it for about a 15 dollar break in the repair price provided the RFX is undamaged and in working order.

i know there is alot of stuff that is taken off the board for the RFX install, so what honestly, what would be more feasible dollar wise? im not counting my shipping back and forth which i am guessing about 30 bucks round trip. that fee is on me and not a factor in the repair.

just let me know here in the thread if you are comfortable taking on this radio. i appreciate any responses.

For some reason that board doesn't respond as well to the RFX module. If you can get
75-80 out of it...that's about it and they aren't the best on sideband either. Frankly,
the sponsor who's probably done more of these than anyone I'm aware of is Doug
at CustomCBradios.com. He can straighten that thing out for you.

I use my 88 with great success on sideband. I had some alignment work done, and, I never turn it off so it stays warmed up. It's my base so leaving it on is no problem.

Hi rbodenbender

The 88 is a poor radio. I have more scrap 88's than any other radio in my shop. They are just not cost effective to modify or repair. If you compare the board on the 88 to say an early Connex you will see that the circuit board is about half as thick as the Connex. Most of the repairs on an 88 are due to bad solder connections. The boards are so thin you can see through them up to a light bulb.

Save your money and don't put another dime into that radio. I can have any radio I want, but I would not take the 88 or the Cobra 150-DX as a boat anchor. Sorry to be so blunt, but I am trying to save you money and frustration down the line. I have seen my share of 88's come across my bench.

Respectfully,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Hey, Rick,
I wasn't trying to contradict you, I was only telling of how I use mine effectively. No doubt it works for me because it is a stationary unit instead of mobile. I m confident your experience ought to be taken into account.
Homer.
