Need advise on tube amp
Hey guys I need your advise. I inherited a tube amp from my dad when he died. It was made the the late 70's. Hasn't been used since the early 80's. I powered it up to let it warm up and after about five min. it started hissing and what looked like steam coming from the case. The amp is a channel King model 500 built by Peterson Electronics in Springfield Mo. They are no longer in business. My question is after setting for 20 years or so is it worth trying to get it working, if I can find someone to work on it. What are the chances the tubes are shot? Would I be better off spending the money on a newer amp instead of trying to fix it because in was my dads. It worked great back in the day but that was a long time ago. Thanks for any info.

Sounds to me like some Capacitors and New Tubes are in order.... Sitting that long I am sure the Caps dried up.... For even the memory of your dad having and using it I would restore it as a keep sake, I think that would be a great project!

Re: Need advise on tube amp
All the parts you need would be readily availiable and considering the size of the amp, not sure what it used for tubes without looking it up, but that Caps shouldn't be pricey at all...

I agree with big mac, the sentimental value of talking on the same box as your old man is priceless sir. The tubes and caps are all available I'm sure, just takes some looking. Check out cbtricks and see if they have any info on it, they might have schematics and all!

Re: Need advise on tube amp
Thanks for the info guys. I was leaning toward wanting to fix it because it was my dads, but didnt know how practical it would be. Sometimes you just have to forget practical. If we were practical we would only have one radio, we know thats not going to happen. The amp is small compared to what people run today, but it always sounded great. I need to try and find out if the company is still in business. Springfield is not that far away. Anyway thanks for all the input I have a lot of irons in the fire right now so its porbably going to be a winter project, but I'll keep you posted.
