Mounting an antenna on a Prius

#313248

Post by Eskimo_Pie »

Looking into mounting a whip on a 2010 Prius. Mag mount is out of the question, and want to use the hatch back lid with a gutter/hood type of mount for a 4 foot fiber glass whip. Also, what kind of engine noise will I be hearing from the gas/electric engine? Thanks for all the help!!

Alright, did some research and found this [Please login or register to view this link]. Looks like the engine noise will be too much and make it a PITA project than a FUN project. But I'd still like to hear of other members that have tired to mount a CB/HAM to their prius.

Thanks

Yep...I was going to say the same thing as him. I had a feeling with all the 'white noise' the squelch would be turned up quite a ways all the time. It's very annoying and a constant 'carrier' like white noise, at least on the hybrids I've driven by or next to.

Not sure there is a good way to get around that either....well, economically.

Bought one of the kids a Prius. Really thinking about the amp input from the hybrid unit.

A noise monster. Tried every trick but no go.

What year Prius did you try a CB & antenna install? I took a road trip from CT to ME today with my President McKinley with a Mag K40 in a 2010 using the cig lighter/aux 12v socket in the arm rest today, but I was also using a in-line noise filter for the power cord. I had very little noise from the hybrid engine, surprisingly enough. There were occasional pops and gurgles of noise when I was braking when the current was returning to the batteries from the regenerative braking system. I was very surprised about how little noise there was, I get more noise from my 1994 Ford explorer daily-driver. I didn't even hear the windshield wiper motors in the driving rain today. In my Explorer I get noise so bad from the wipers, it's almost impossible to hear any LSB DX contacts. I was on ch19 AM monitoring the truckers and when skip was rolling, ch38 LSB, I could hear all the DX out there in the Prius. Total trip time was about 3.5 hours and had the McKinley on the whole time. Only other noise I heard was from a passing Lexus SUV and over head power lines. I even made a local contact to a base station operator when the conditions quieted down on 38 LSB. Oddly enough, I got some noise from another Prius when he went by me in the passing lane. Perhaps they have filtered the 12v socket well enough and shielded the engine well enough for RFI. Anyone else have good or bad success in mounting and using a CB & antenna in their Prius? Thanks!!

BTW, the brand is BANDIT noise filter I got from an eb@y seller for about $20 shipped, with bare wires with fuses on both pos and neg leads, and a regular 3-pin cobra/uniden plug on the other, if I remember, it's rated for 15 amps or so, and has 12 ga. wires.
