advice for base
im tryin to get my mobil runnin better but needed some advice on a base station set up nothin big deal but i gotta 30ft ladder ant mount and a firestik fireup99 5ft on top but she had a maco-alpha v5/8 ant still in the box so, i found my moms old stuff so what would be better cobra 29 wx, galaxy 959 am w/ssb and a amp not sure who its made by but its 250watts does this sound ''OK'' for a starter base.Like the cobra cause it has the noaa weather on it and a pa output so i can alert me and the neighbors when a tornado or hurricane is coming
Since the Maco 5/8 is a complete antenna I think it would be a better choice as a base antenna. As for the two radios, that's more or less whichever one you think you'd rather operate. Pick one, try it for a while, then try the other one. Try things without that amplifier, see what can be done without it. That means more than just a couple of minutes, give it a fair chance. If you want to then try that amplifier, just keep in mind that it won't be a miracle worker, and they are not really all that 'simple' to set up and operate correctly.
Don't be in a huge rush with any of this, you've got plenty of time to 'get it right'...

ya its funny my moms buddy K5 he told me he's real good at base set up's but not mobils he said im sure its all similar ive just never got into mobil cb stuff
If you're talking about the antennas for $400, I think I'd have to take a pass on it. There appears to be a log-periodic for VHF/UHF, a discone for scanning, and something like an 'A99' for CB? Not so sure about what's actually there, so don't take that as gospel.

I would go with what Doc is telling you he is very radio smart and would not stear you wrong. Just use what you have for a while and learn how it all works and how to use it. Then down the road you can alway upgrade.
