Hello all,

has anyone mounted there radio to the roof of an older gm pickup? How hard is it to get the headliner down and what's up there to mount a radio to?

Thank you.....

Years ago it was the rage to have things mounted up there. There were specialy designed trays that would mount up top and some were designed to add radios and CB's.

I have mounted up there before but there aint much for mounting. I dont know what year your truck is but you could look at automotive accesory companys to see if they make those trays for your truck.

Stop by an auto upholstory shop and they can fill you in on how to remove the headliner. Most are 1 piece of premolded foam with contact cement holding the cloth padded headliner material.

Don't know if you have a rigid liner or not in your truck. I had a Cobra 29 mounted to the liner in my 93 Blazer using expandable anchors like you would use on thin wallboard. Used the anchors to mount the bracket and then radio to the bracket. Ran it that way for 3-4 years until I sold the truck. Worked out great.

Thank you both,

it's a '95 reg. cab. The headliner is not rigid at all. Looking a little closer last night it does not look to be too bad to pull down. I am not sure if there is anything to mount to after I get it down..... might have to rig something up to span across from side to side.

I looked into one of the shelf things but they are to low and get in the way of the view.....

Will let you know what I find after this weekend...

Thanks again

my buddy mounted his in his ram mega cab on the roof. he put up a thin piece of plywood between the headliner and the and metal roof. he then put the headliner up and ran screws through the mount, through the headliner and sunk them into the wood

Thank you all,

I did a little looking at the other day and the headliner seems to be glued to the roof and stiff enough to hold a DX 949. I will look more into it this weekend.....

Usualy the headliner material is attached to a thin piece of foam rubber ( 1/16") which is glued to a stiff foam board shaped to the outline of the roof.

I would not try to screw into that as it wont hold the weight of the radio.
