Just curious if anybody has installed a radio in a hybrid or seen one done? If so was there any electrical noise interference from all the electrical stuff from the hybrid system? I am tossing around the idea of when I install my mobile in my Bronco to do the radio and antenna where it can be easily transferred to my commuter car which is a hybrid. If its going to cause alot of electrical noise and make the radio unusable there isnt much since in doing it lol. I wont be running any external power just a 100w HF Ham rig and the antenna will most likely be a screwdriver on a hitch mount.

I hope I can make it work since I spend 75% of my driving in the hybrid, 20k miles since may when I bought it. I know there has to be a way to get around the radio interference to the car and the electrical interference to the radio. Plus if I can make it work then I can get some Traxxas R/C stickers to go on it maybe even a flaming antenna painted on it somewhere lol. But gotta work out the interference first. on a good note, the battery pack is under the back seat lol no thats easy access for power and ground wires. Antenna wire well I am still working on that route but it will be easy enough.

after reading another post about s10 problems I may stock up on reynolds wrap lol

I'm not real familiar with the hybrids. Do you have access to 12v power off of that battery pack?

yea it has a small 12 volt battery in there, it also has the big hybrid battery that says in big red letters high voltage do not touch :icon_e_surprised:

Easy way to find out, would be just to hook up a radio with the cigarette lighter outlet and a magnet mounted antenna and see how it sounds with the car running...You wouldn't have to mount the thing, just lay it in the floor or the seat...Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to hook up and see how it sounds.

For as that go's, you could just run a temporary wire to the battery and fire it up!

For many CB's a cigerette lighter plug won't hurt, but for a:

Most 12v plugs in cars are not rated for much more then a few amps of current. I wouldn't trust one for a 100 watt rig of any kind. I would run the wires directly to the 12v battery in any case.

That being said, I don't know how the 12v system in a hybrid works. I don't know how long the battery will last, or how quickly it is recharged by the vehicle (or when for that matter, constant or only when the engine is running...)

The best thing I can say to do it try it and find out, then come back and tell everyone about it.

Hello Kevin,
I have access to dealership Technicians for General Motors Hybrids, As well as Mitsubishi MiEV, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai and Kia!!!
If you are going to install it in the car I recommend a cigarette lighter test first to see if you have electrical interference problems on the receiver, the noise blanker system on many radios can be adjusted to compensate for it and additional modifications can be made to the radio how to filter the d.c. input circuitry... your biggest problem will be if you have receiver interference... tell me which vehicle you are using and I can try onehere at the shop, if necessary, using a Cobra 148 and Wilson 5000 for the test set up!!!I have all the vehicles available!
Pretty cool to have friends in all the right places huh!!!
I think I'll try it anyways just to see what happens, You have to watch out for the 300 voltl battery pack if it's a GM car... But I can hook up to that as well, With a DC to Dc voltage regulator set up...
I'm quite familiar with the cars, But you are the first guy to hook up a radio to them that I know of, I wonder why I didn't think of that! :)

As shameful as it is to admit this, it will be in a 2012 PriusC, the little one... :oops: I am hoping that I can put one in there so make that miserable commute better.

Think I would be more concerned about finding room for the radio, than whether or not it had a little noise in the back ground! :mrgreen:

Guess you could always strap it to the roof if you had to... :lol:

It will be a tight fit lol I may have to remove the passenger seat and just rack mount it there haha

Hey, something like this would be good for testing out the interference right? its a Kraco emergency radio. I can pick it up for $20 and it works.
