Is there any protocol. I have a decent barefoot setup tuned antenna properly and checked by a pro. I have gotten good 2 way skip a couple of times from all the way on the coast at ther beach of the ocean in MA to Youngstown OH both times. Problem is, most of the time I hear folks chattering away and they can't hear me. I know it is because they have more power than I do but If I did have more power what is the protocol for getting a contact? I think "radio check" is lame.
Also, is there a way to boost my recieve capabilities inexpensively?

If you are talkin about local contacts, sometimes drivers just wont answer. Break 19 for whatever works most times. Radio checks will at least let you know it is getting out just that no one wants to answer.
You can find inexpensive amps at some of our sponsers. I think Polomir 250's are around 100.00 or so. ( Dont quote me )
A lot of times it is just the conditions. If conditions are right you can realy talk, when not it just dont mater what you do you aint gona get out.
