How important is SWR tuning?

I'm a CB newbie with a minimal rig (RadioShack TRC-241 Handheld Transceiver and RadioShack 21-989 Magnetic 39 1/2" Fiberglass Whip on the trunk of my four-wheeler). The antenna destructions say that I should get an SRW meter and tune the antenna by cutting it, but will the increased range be worth the effort?
