Siltronix 1011D on AM

can anyone tell me why these sound so awful on RX ??
it's like the RX is too narrow for normal AM CB..!!

i have a 101E which sounded bad before i fitted the 6khz filter, but even then was better than the siltronix..!!

both siltronix just sound like junk compared to a normal AM CB or my yaesu.!!

The Siltronix nor the Yeasu were meant to be AM radios and like you said a filter helped the Yeasu. Most of the radios you are listening to are probably not tuned to perfection, and the driver turned all the way up because the radios at the most only put out 35 to 40 watts AM. When the grid and plate are adjusted properly and the driver set so the output is 25 watts they sound quite nice, the Siltronix can be helped with the addition of a D104 TUG8 stand, the Yeasu's like Turner mics best.

I always use the D-104 or other crystal element mic. The old tube radios needed the higher ohm (1500) instead of the new solid state radio which need about 500.

There's not too many radios out there that can compete with a Siltronix on SSB if it's in top working order. That said there aren't too many Silly's out there that will talk worth a hoot on AM. Just the nature of the beast. As others have said running an un-amplified D-104 or the Shure Mic. can make them sound ok on AM. I've had several Silly's and loved them all, still have one. I keep a Shure Mic for it. Can't remember which one though might be a 555. But it wasn't really made for AM so I don't take it there.

i believe he is referring to rx audio, in this case you need that am filter you stated was installed in your 101, the siltronics was made for ssb not am.

The SWAN AM crystal filter will work perfectly in the 1011's. (Gee i wonder why.....LOL) Next Ham convention or swap meet you can make it to would be worth the trip. I've seen many of them at these shows. Guys like to use them in other projects as well and are still fairly common finds.

Right you are on that one. The Swan's and the Sils were meant to be SSB rigs and are not really worth the AM effort. Bit on SSB they are great.
