What is a good staring point for the echo, squelch, mic.....
Okay, you guys have guided me on the radio to get, the place to get it, the antenna to use and how to best to power it. Now what are some good general settings to start so I don't waste time trying to get it close to where it needs to be. I realize every ones taste are different but there must be some good starting point.

As far as the echo, you want to adjust it to where you can hear your words being deepened. You don't want the echo to actually get to the point of reverbing your speech, unless you want to be another id-10-t truck driver that wants to look like a moron on the radio. (Sorry, just telling it like it is...)
I can't advise you on the mic gain on the SWP radios, because i've never run one. My preferences on the radios I run though is about 75 to 85 percent on modulation. I like a real clean sounding radio, and when you clip the limiter in them and crank the modulation wide open it tends to overmodulate the radio... sounding like crap. If you've ever been driving down the road and heard a trucker that had a REALLY loud radio, but you couldn't understand most if not all of what he/she is saying, then you've most likely heard the overmodulation that i'm referring to.
Truth being is this - it's your radio, you run it however YOU want it. Everyone's taste is different, and what I prefer may not agree with what you like. If in doubt, get a buddy with a radio to drive a couple miles away from you, and while you're talking into your radio, let him record it so you can hear for yourself what you sound like on the air. If more people would do this, perhaps there might not be so many crappy sounding radios on the air! LOL!

ON THIS SUBJECT.. I FIND IT IS BETTER TO LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE ON THE RADIO. FOR EXAMPLE... IF I THINK MY ECHO SOUNDS GREAT TO MYSELF, BUT TO THE RADIO CHECKS I GET PEOPLE TELL ME IT IS NOT CLEAR, THEN I WILL ADJUST. REMEMBER YOU WANT TO BE HEARD CLEAR TO EVERYONE ELSE, NOT YOURSELF.. YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY & WHAT YOU SAY. BUT DOES THE PEOPLE LISTENING UNDERSTAND ME, NOT DO I UNDERSTAND MYSELF..IS THE QUESTION.. WHEN I GET DOZENS OF RADIO CHECKS THRU OUT THE DAY TRAVELING 4 - 5 HUNDRED MILES & I GET BACK LOUD & CLEAR, LOUD & PROUD, OR OTHER POSITIVE FEED BACK, THEN YOU KNOW YOU GOT THINGS SET RIGHT ON MIKE, RADIO , E.T.C... ON THE SQUELCH... I TURN IT COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO HEAR IT ALL & THEN TURN BACK UNTIL JSUT ALL NOISE DISSAPEARS. NOW IF I'M TALKING TO SOMEONE REAL CLOSE, AS IN TRAVELING IN SAME DIRECTION I WILL TURN SQUELCH MORE CLOCKWISE TO NOT HEAR OTHER FARTHER AWAY TALKERS.
