Checking for range....

#35672

Post by Choirboy »

Well, I got a SWR meter, and the lowest reading I can get is 1.5. What's the best (politest) way to ask other drivers if they can hear me and where they are so I can get an idea of how much range I have without sounding like a complete idiot...?

Thanks!

Just ask for a radio check, and then when they reply "ITS WORKING", then ask them about your audio and their 20

I'm a truck driver and I always try and come back when I hear a call for a radio check, don't be surprised to hear things like "NO CHECK CASH ONLY or CHECKS IN THE MAIL", means the same thing as it's working. I will sometimes ask where the radio check it is coming from to see how well I am receiving, just remember to have your volume turned up, I had a guy today ask for a radio check and I answered him about five times before he realized it was turned down on his radio. Don't ever be affair to speak up and ask, That's a good way to start a conversation with someone, and if they are driving away from you, you can see how far your getting out.

You may also here things like I've got mine or mines on the dash. But that means they are hearing you.

Choirboy, just ask for a radio check, or if that don't work, try what my bud Premo does at his shop...

"Is my wife putting out?"

Believe me, someone will answer to that one and you'll sure know then if your radio is working! LOL!

Just throwing in my 2 cents...

If someone says you sound like crap, and to toss your radio out of the window DON'T take them literally, chances are they are just kidding or something with their unit is off. If you get guys telling you that your radio is crap constantly, then maybe it is... that's when you get someone with a portable to give you a radio check, so you can both hear at the same time plus test it at different distances as stuff.
