MFJ hamProAudio EQ Tips?

#371046

Post by ogdoa »

I have one of these EQs setup. It runs pretty good with a studio microphone but I think it could sound better with proper adjustments. I would like to setup a secondary radio to hear how it sounds but my base over drives every one that I have tried to set up. I also leave the noise gate disabled because I cant figure out how to adjust that. Any tips on adjusting this piece of equipment.

Being nobody has jumped in yet, I'll give it a stab.

I use the W2IHY EQ/Noise gate on my Icom radios in the shack. I do run the noise gate even though the mic (Audio-Technica ATR-30 boom mic) isn't especially bad about picking up background noise. I run strictly VOX though and it really helps smooth out keying. It would be very helpful to know what radio(s) you are running this mic with and/or any mods to the radio that have been done. Often you should be able to simply run barefoot radio and no antenna on the 2nd radio without over driving the receiver. That is assuming you are using CB radios which should (or usually do) around 4w. The receiving radio having an RF gain turned all the way down can be helpful too and use headphones when listening.

If you are over driving the receive radio pretty likely it sounds just as badly on the air. Doesn't matter what brand you use.

I've not looked closely at that mic nor it's settings but it probably has a gain adjustment somewhere on it. I'd probably start that turned way back, treble & base settings midrange or off. Radio mic gain turned at 50%...that depends totally on what radio and any mods that have been done. If the mod limiter has been clipped, pretty likely no matter what you do it'll sound over driven. Again, it depends on the radio though.

Overwhelming the IF on a second radio will happen even if the radio has an RF Gain circuit turned all the way down. You can try a Pi or Tee Attenuator, [Please login or register to view this link] , inline with a dummy load on the second radio. Most of the YouTube tuners have/use one. Grounding the radio case will also help some, location away from the testing radio will help, good headphones will help remove any feedback problems.

I'm running this on a Saturn. No mods have been done to the Saturn other than meter lights. Sometimes I run it on My 2970 but I have not tried it since we repaired my antenna. I tried running the secondary radio on a dummy load and it was still over driven. Maybe its my secondary radio? I'm using a Cobra 29 for a monitor radio now. Today I'll try a couple other radios and see what the results are. I'm going to try that Tee idea to. It looks like a simple circuit to build.
