Tram Titan tube dilemma!
Ok I just cleaned up my Tram Titan and got it fired up. Have the schematic as well. But I noticed something. Tube V10, which the user manual and schematic state is a 6BR8, in its place in my Tram is a 12AT7! I looked under the chassis and nothing looks modified. Did Tram make some modification at some time? I got the 6BR8 tube, but the Tram does not work with it. Anyone out there can give some insight? Thanks.

The Titan was made in 3 or 4 versions, which is it? To use that tube had to be modded but the good thing it worked, it has a 6v and 12v heater, (the first number on the tube is the voltage).

Re: Tram Titan tube dilemma!
Hi Greg, it is the Tram Titan I, non-ssb model. It was not modded in any way as all the parts on the tub socket are original. Also, according to my Heathkit tube checker, the filament is 6.3volts.

Right, it is a standard 9 pin socket. It will work in both a 6v and 12v environment but it definitely is not a crossover tube for the 6BR8. I would leave it as it is a heftier tube than the original and add the change in your manual.

Re: Tram Titan tube dilemma!
I am not looking at a schematic but possibly the only mod to the pins would be the linking of pins 4&5 and the other side of the 6 vt. heater connects to pin 9. I have a couple of Titan II's and I believe Tram used the chassis as one leg of the heater circuit. Possibly pins 4&5 are connected to + and pin 9 to ground. If this works and is the case I am glad to know this as I may convert some of the tubes in my Titan II radios to the more common 12Ax7 family.
The Titan II's also had variations. The modulator tube in the 1st one I got is a 6GK6 while the second radio has a more powerful 6GM5 in this position. I am wondering which one came first... the 6GM5 was also used in the Titan IV as the final... It is a hard to find tube ( for me) but luckily I found some converters to 6L6 ( on the way from China). The 6L6 is a much stouter tube and may be capable of higher output in the radio. I am looking forward to trying the converter sockets.
