What type of power supply is best?

#378851

Post by MightyMo »

I'm stating to work on my own radios. All I have is mobile setups so far. I want to get a power supply to do bench work and maybe use a mobile as a base set up for a while. What do you recomend? How many amps should I get?

Thanks.

I'm partial to astron. Bigger is better and a decent 30 amp will power most bench needs including small amps. You ca find one for around $100. I like the small switching ones as they are light but a heavy linear one is hard to beat if you don't need to haul it around. That said I have a few and even triplite works. The only brand I avoid is pyramid but that is just me. My next supply adventure will be solar and a deep cycle battery only because I have never done it and it sounds fun.

I think my CB power cord has a 2.5 amp fuse in it. If I hook it up to a 30 amp power supply, will it blow the fuse immediately?

No, that will work fine. The 30 amp power supply is capable of supplying 30 amps. The radio will only draw the amperage it needs. Think of the amperage stored in a car battery. Hundreds of amps but it will run a CB radio just fine.

This is not so. I run a 35 & 50 Amp power supply for everything for years.

Agreed on Astron power supplies - good stuff. Stay away from Pyramid.

I really appreciate the feedback. I most likely would have gone with Pyramid if it wasn't for you. In the future I'll probably get an Astron. For now I went with QJE. I got it off amazon. It seemed to have good reviews. I wanted one with a meter and the Astrons with the meters quickly went out of my price range. The model I got is QJ-PS30SW I. So far I really like it. Anyone ever used one compared to the Astrons before?
