Barefoot skip......
what are the odds of making a contact with a barefoot radio without SSB?

Are any channels better than others to try?

I was told by someone that shoots all over that i will probably never reach out and touch someone with a barefoot radio

I'd say you can talk skip every now and then without a boost but if want to talk dx on a regular basis I'd get a small amp.

Thanks for the reply, as well as on other posts. As you can see, i am interested!!! But that whole money thing is a big obstacle. Hopefully i can start making more money soon or have a little spare from our tax return

Silvereagle, i tried to PM you, but i don't think it went thru. It's showing in outbox instead of sent.

Where is a good place to buy one and what all wiring/power does it take to run it? I'm in a diesel wagon and my company doesnt like us to wire anything in that cant be plugged into a 12v power port. But, i may be getting in my own truck in the near future.

Honestly it depends on your antenna setup how well it is installed and your location. I ran a bare foot cobra 25ltd with the modulator clipped with a 102whip on my 1998 blazer 1.2swr and I made it too hawii California texas Louisiana and more. I've heard the wilson 5000 is great .only antennas ive run is a 102 whip and a mm9 short shaft that unfortunately was mangled when I totaled the blazer at 75 Apparently rolling 9 times doesn't help it haha radio was okay mag mount was toast I resolder the coax and stuck it in my jeep .

Trying to shoot skip barefoot on SSB isn't that hard but on AM it is almost impossible. The thing to do is stay off the active channels, 6, 22, 28, barefoot you are a guppy in a shark tank, and look at the quieter channels, listen and call out, see if you get a contact.

Matters not what you have, sometimes being on the air at the right time is all that is needed.

Agree 100 percent. Sometimes even a great antenna needs a little backup.

I have a Uniden PC68 I bought at a flea market with the big finals in it and a k40plus antenna on the wife's car and i hit California almost everyday after work from up here in Ohio. It can be done. Just find a channel that isn't quite as noisey as the others and keep shouting, someone will find you.

Shooting skip isn't mode dependent. If your signal will travel thousands of miles on SSB, it will do the same using AM. That said, SSB is more efficient so it works better. The problem with "shooting skip" on the popular AM channels is that everyone else is using power.

That will raise his signal about 2 s-units...enough to make or break a contact? IMO, not really...especially on 6.

Antenna is everything! I have talked up and down the eastern seaboard with good antennas (large wire antennas high up in trees!). Have done this with unmodified junk radios like my old Realistic TRC-501. I will soon put up another good antenna again and have enough antenna gain to out talk my 100 watt mobile with a 4 watt base.

You're probably right about that. Channel 6 is hard to talk on anyway. I was able to get thru just a couple of times myself. One of the times I made it through I just kept on and on and changed my name voice and location and talked their language and this is a true story I called one loud mouth a mud duck and said he was over modulating and he finally responded back. had to trick the guy to get acknowledged. With that said you're right though a 203 would be hard to play with the big boys on certain AM channels. I know on another post he said he was tight on money so the 203 was the first thing that entered my mind.

I stay away from the splatter bowl you can talk just about anywhere besides 6 on am . Your antenna is your key too getting out further and being able too pull people in. The 102 whip is 20 $ the monkey made is about 70 $ I personally run dual whips on my pickups with good coax made for a dual setup I got out great everyone on the trails would tell me too turn it down when it already was! 1.1 swr never an issue I was using a cobra 29 it took the abuse and was submerged several times from water coming in. Still have it walks talks and receives just fine of course I immediately cleaned it when I got home

I'm using a Uniden PC122XLT in my van with an old k40 whip. You can get out there like others say but it is hard. I run bare foot and was able to get out to TN on channel 1 on a cloudy day. The conditions need to be right of coarse but it can be done

I know this is a old topic but YEAH 6 is rough to get a response on, definitely tough being a guppy in a shark tank. :fish: :nemo:
