Turner desk mic question

#387394

Post by Badge19 »

Just picked up a Turner Super Sidekick, wired with a 4 pin connector. To use this mic on my Uniden Washington can I swap the 4pin for a 5pin or will I have to use a 4pin to 5pin adaptor

you could try an adapter but some of the 5 pin radios will squeal using this set up. the 5 pin uses 2 grounds and works best with a 5 pin wired correctly. one ground goes to the audio ground wire on the mic plug and the other actually goes to board ground through the mic plug.
Turner
1- White
2- Shield
3- Black
4- Red
5- Blue
Yellow NC
here is what each wire does.
Stock
1- Audio
2- Shield
3- Receive
4- Sw Com
5- Transmit
this should be the layout for the plug for a turner as long as the mic cord has not been changed.

The adapter is the cheapest way to go and it lets the mic be plugged into other radios as well. Here is a couple other ways of showing how to rewire the mic to work on radios like the Washington, this process is a little complicated but worth doing. Old Turner mics have great sound quality.

Thank you for the replies, great info. I'm currently going with the adaptor, so far so good; no squeal. Btw, I opened the 4pin connector and don't see the blue(common) wire; wondering if mic has been rewired.

Yes that is an old 4 wire microphone, only the new mics have 6 wires. The adapter uses a diode in the switching to compensate for the grounded shield.

The Turner "B" models were 6 wire mics. Wouldn't be a problem wiring them to any radio

Awesome, I had to make my own "pinball" type switches for my +3 and +2 mics. Doing the relay is really awesome.....and is a time-saver. You are RIGHT about the unavailability of the "open audio kits" that Turner once offered decades ago.

Thanks for the video... MDYoungblood!!

one thing to remember about the super side kicks is that there is a adjustment under the mike as well as the one one top,, i have seen a few people trying to wire it to their radios and complain it is bad but all it was just that the bottom needed to be turned down to match up with the radio,, with my first generation president washington the underneath is about half way and the top is half way and the radio is all the way,, every one says it is clear with lots of modulation,,,,

I know CB World has the coiled cords but you might have a hard time finding straight cord, especially a cord with only one of the 6 conductors shielded. Looks like a deep internet search.

i would settle for a coiled cord and just straighten it with a heat gun, if i could only get Santa's little helpers to fix it all, haha
