Can you repair a cut cable?
Can you repair a cut cable?
I've searched the internet, but i seem to get different answers on this. So i have some cable (LMR400) that had the last 4-5 inches cut off. What i'm wondering is, can i take the 2 ends, strip them, solder the center conductors together. put the white plastic over it, Then wrap that once with electrical tape, pull the braid back over it, put the outer cover back on and tape it all up. Would that work?
Thanks all

It can be done, here is a link to a topic on the forum;

The better way is to install a PL259 on the end and use a double female SO239 barrel connector.

Just so you know, i'm going with the new pl259. And instead of a barrel connector, i'll be using a lightning arrester (MFJ270)

Looks like a good plan. I have an Archer 20-021 Discharge unit that is for the same thing.
I am going to hook it in-line on the IMax 2000.

Re: Can you repair a cut cable?
I hope to order the supplies this weekend. But now i'm wondering something else. Can you take one type of cable and connect it to another type. Basically i will be running LMR400 cable from my antenna down to my lightning arrester/Discharge unit and from there, i will be running LMR240 into the house, to the radio. As long as they are both 50 ohm, should it work?

Re: Can you repair a cut cable?
I have RG 8 size (LMR400, RG213, etc.) coax running out from my switch box but most of my jumpers are LMR240 or equivalent, I've kind of leaned away from Times Microwave wire (probably the best coax available) to ARB brand (I'm rating it second best), a tad easier to work with and still made in the USA. I like Belden brand too but the price is raising on it.
As long as it's 50ohm your good to go, only difference is the amount of loss per foot.

That's good to know. Kind of had a feeling it would be. But never know these days. Plus it helps save a few cents.
