Re: cb radio and Ham radio Xtals question help?
Here is what im trying to do.
Since CB has picked up in the past year or so, I would like to bring back the xtal oscillator boards to add extra channels to basically the Cobra and Uniden Am radios and other cb radios that share the same pc board and xtal layout. I have a company that makes pc boards and I have designed a 4 xtal oscillator board. Also a 6 xtal switch to switch in/out xtals for xtra channels also to mod the radio to a 10 meter rig.
It all depends on locating the xtals for the uppers and lower channels.
Any thoughts on doing this and do you think cb owners will be interested in modding their radios for extra channels. Right now no one makes a kit to do this, the Expo 100 kits are no longer made and I have searched to seek out any kits made to do this.
I know Les C makes maybe something but not sure might be discontinued.
All this will be for the cobra/uniden radios that the pll cant be modded and a xtal oscillator board to inject the signal frequency like the expo 100 kits.
Just need some opinions positive or negative welcomed.
I have worked on radios for over 40 years and work for the Government building ballistic missiles and payloads for satellites. And also was involved in their launch from Florida to Hawaii.
Just to give you a little of my background in electronics.
Thanks for your time.

I believe you answered your on question here. With the use of PLL circuitry there just isn't a market for custom crystals, now that being said I am sure for a price those crystal companies still in business will make an order of custom cuts.dss56 wrote: Sep 10 2018, 20:55 I'm looking for a place that still makes for cb and ham radios.

Re: cb radio and Ham radio Xtals question help?
Channel mods are a thing of the past, with the amount of conversion 10m radios, it is just not worth the time and effort. Personally I stopped doing them years ago and started to preserve some of the classic radios of the day.dss56 wrote: Sep 11 2018, 13:04 Here is what im trying to do.

Gregg
Like I mentioned this is for the radios that the pll is not programmable not like the 8719 - 02A - 858 and others. This is more geared again for pll's that you cant mod. I guess I have more time on my hands and got nothing better to do

You might want to check out CB Tricks online, they have old copies of a mod magazine called Secret CB, loaded with mods for older radios, some worked some didn't. To date the easiest radio to mod for channels are the Galaxy series and whatever radios that used the same "Ranger" board.

Re: cb radio and Ham radio Xtals question help?
I have all the secret cb mags and others, also have a few mod Articles i designed in some volumes back in the days when I was doing business with Selman Enterprises With Doris Selman and her husband located in Florida. Believe me I modded many a radios in my day. Did them all back in the 60s 70s and 80s. Also a Ham licensed operator. Own an online oldies radio station in my home town here in the Boston Ma area. I guess i just need to do something to keep busy.
I will scan back through the Secret CB mags and check out and look for some old radio mods of un modded plls If you wanted the upper/lower channels you would need an oscillator board to do the mod or a xtal switch to mod the pll's. Well nice talking to you Gregg thanks for the company.
