WOuld a galaxy 959 be able to push around 50- 60 watts with a peak and a few other modifications added to the radio?

they final in that radio will do a good 20 watts, there are mods to get more, but if you are going to use an amp, you don't need them,,,by the time you probably do all that work to that radio you could buy an expot Galaxy cheaper,,,,look at a Galaxy 45,,,man they talk,,,and can do pretty decent watts

Or a Galaxy 99v for a full featured radio. 99v is a duel final radio and you can get 50+ watts.

I get 20 watts out of mine just by turning VR14, and it swings to 25-30. I think it's VR14, I could be wrong. Look online
