CBtricks.com only has an Ultra II listed, but only has an owner's manual and no mods/tuneups listed. I guess you'll have to google it.

There isn't much info on this radio other than it has a single final SMT board which means there isn't many adjustments, LT1 will adjust power, do this with no modulation, after this is done adjust RVM1 for modulation. This is all I could find.

That Cobra is a good little radio for what it is, just like it’s Uniden counterpart. Their best features are their size (if you don’t have a lot of room) and their price. But trying to get too much out of them might not be the way to go. I’m not sure if there are many, if any simple adjustments you can make to that small chassis. There aren’t a lot of really good local tech guys out there anymore either (I mean like in the 70’s, where there were 20 in every major city … only 2 here in Utah I know of), to do you a good job, unless you’re a do-it-yourself-er. I’ve had a few of those Cobras and when one failed, just out of warranty, I called my local tech and he said, “just shoot it with Deoxit or buy another one. Unless it has more than 4 knobs, it’s not worth messing with”. He was right, I bought it for 30 bucks on Amazon. (In fact, I bought two and the other one is still going strong 4 years later … like I said, good little radio).

I picked up a Uniden ebay.us/5Zgwnh" class="postlink autolinks">PC76XL (free) from a trucking buddy. It’s a real nice radio with lots of features but had an intermittent transmit problem. I took it to the same guy, and said “lets trick this one out, it has way more than 4 knobs!”. He had it apart and diagnosed the problem in under 5 minutes. Then he said, “OK, you probably paid 40 bucks for this (unless you’re an idiot) and it’ll cost another 30 for parts, 20 to put them in, and 40-50 more for finals and to tune and tweak. So, if it’s worth 150 bucks to you, I’ll get to work on it. But first, look on ebay or Amazon and I’ll bet you can find more, for less”. Then he pointed to his display case and said “I’ve got 10 radios in there, better than your Uniden, and you can have any one of them for 80 bucks, and I’ll knock off 10 bucks trade in on yours. Needless to say, I didn’t have him work on it. I was hoping to spend 20 bucks and walk out with a screamer.

I had one of those Ultra III’s in my truck for a while and it was a great little radio if you’re OK with simple and not many features. Sometimes you just need more than squelch, which, by the way, is what fails on those little radios. If it goes, throw it away. Deoxit won't fix it. (Keep the mic though, it's a great spare for any Cobra.)
