Need mic wiring configuration for a President radio, model:Honest Abe

here is my situation. Today, My old, but reliable Honest Abe radio is working, meaning, I can hear others talking on channels. But I cannot transmit. Now years ago, I had the same problem with it, and Thinking the mic had gone bad, I bought a new one. I bought a cobra "High gear". Yet I was still not able to transmit, even with the new mic. I got frustrated and put it all away in a box, b/c Not knowing any one or any web site to ask for help, what was I gonna do. I thought, I'll wait, and just maybe, I would meet someone who knew far more than me about it. That has not happened. Now it is present day and my 8 yr old grand son, found my old walkie talkies and has fallen in love with them and has a million questions for me about radios, and this has fired up my desire to get the radio working. So I learn from the internet that, as you probably know, some times, replacement mics are not wired to work with all radios, and there is no code of law or ethics, that any radio mfg. follows, or that states where each wire must be located on all mic plugs and radios.
1) so, I have to find what the wire config is for my radio.
2) and also for the new mic. and that is two, of several bits of info, I need from this group.
3) may be the new mic is bad? as I learned from my internet searching, that something inside a mic, can break. if my new mic is broke inside, I guess that is not fixable?
4) Is there a new mic, that is wired right from the mfg., so that it will work properly, with my president radio ?
5) I really don't want to think there is something possibly wrong inside the radio, just a mic issue...I'm crossing my fingers.
So what does happen when I key the mic? The TX light on the radio lites up, but the meter on the radio, does not move when I talk. And that is why I think that the wires on the mic cord are not matched to the radio terminals.
So before finding this forum, I found a web site that showed Microphone wiring. and i found a video on you tube about how to identify each wire / terminal in the plug of the mic.
So I took my mutli meter and followed the instructions I found and made several changes to the wire locations on the mic plug. But not 100% certain I have identified the terminals on both the radio and the mic correctly. But, from my 4 hrs of testing and changing wires, I feel that the new mic is also broken, but I could be wrong. That is why I am asking all these questions and writing this long 'letter'.
6) would you all agree that, modulate = audio? RX = receive, TX= transmit, ground = common shield, and this will be a bare twisted wire?
Wouldn't it be great to learn that even just one member, of this group, who knows a lot more than me about radios, lived close to me,and together we could solve my radio issue! wow, would I welcome that!

The microphone wiring for your radio is;

pin 1 - ground or shield
pin 2 - audio
pin 3 - transmit/TX
pin 4 - receive/RX

This is standard wiring for most Uniden, Cobra, Galaxy, 4 pin radios, so a mic for them should work. I can't give you a color code for your stock mic because the manufacturer used different colors during production.

thanks SO MUCH!! I'm going to assume then, that the pins read left to right, and not, down and up, is that correct?

If you look at the end of the mic plug you will see the numbers on it, tiny but there, I wear 2.5 cheaters to read,, lol.

Wow, I just looked and yes the y are there! I never saw them!, and I looked at and took apart that 'plug' 16 times! wow! This is great,as I am learning a lot! I want to say thank you again, MDYoungblood, you have been such a very big help!
I have a strong inkling that your very knowledgeable on radios, and so I put before you, my next questions.

SO I have questions for you about antennas, specifically the two I have. We talked about them before, but now lets talk about the ends of the antennas, as I think something is missing on one of them, but I'm not certain if there is or not, and I want your opinion. SO how can I get a picture I took, to you, of the antenna? as I don't see any paper clip symbol here to attach a pic, with to my post. or should I PM you and that is how? b/c I am going to use one of these antenna with my base unit, with the 4 wires coming off the bottom as you instructed.

second question, is about microphone repairing.
I have had mine apart 4 times, that I can recall, so I have a very good image in my head of how it looks and goes together. So is there a means to replace the parts inside the mic cover, so that the mic works again? As something must be broken inside for it not to work. What 'usually goes bad inside the mic?
For that must be what is wrong with mine, b/c, for I took your advise, and bought a new mic, and it worked right out of the package, and my radio is working just fine!. hurray!!! I have a great signal, say the drivers passing by my home who responded to my 'radio check' call tonight. Am I happy!!!!!
SO if I can repair my broken mic I would then have a back up. And I can solder pretty well. SO are parts available to do this?, and from where? and what would I probably need to get?

Then, what do people, and drivers, use to protect their mics from damage, when it is often difficult to drive safely and try to hang up the mic in the 'special mic holder' on the side of the radio, plus that 'special mic holder' is not all that secure, like if you come across a large bump in the road!... as I have experienced. Your suggestions / recommendations please.

First, you will be able to post pics on the forum soon, use the forum's image poster or attachment, you can find both under the text box to the left of the "Submit" button.
Most problems with microphones are broken wires or connections or a bad PTT switch, usually dirty. Dirty contacts I use "DeoxIT D5" spray, it is a contact cleaner that will clean tarnish off the contacts. Broken wires is a multi meter job and patients, had a mic once that tested great but as soon as it was hooked up it didn't work, turned out the way the cord was bent would break the connection.
As far as protecting the mic, I have no clue, I just carry a second in the glove box just in case.

Among items in a large box, the wife and I bought at a estate sale, are 3 small antennas, two are magnetic base and one is a clip to a metal edge of a car, type base, these papers / instructions with these, say 'intended for cell phones'. Does any one use a roof mounted antennas with their cell phone today? So, MDyoungblood, can cell phone antennas, be used with CB radios?
I noticed that the 'terminal end' on the cox, is too small to attach to a CB radio, so would have to be switched out, that is if,the antenna can be used with a CB radio.

And, tell me how do I navigate to the web page, where I can see all the 'topic categories', and this 'chat room' ? I first saw all these when, I first found this great web site, but not since then, have I found a means to get there again.

No, they are totally a different frequency.
