hey all

When did cobra stop making the 148?

What has taken its place in the cobra lineup?

If not Cobra , what would you all recommend as a new radio with USB/LSB ?

The Cobra 148 GTL went out of production almost 2 years ago and nothing has came out to replace it but I have heard some roamers about a "LX" model (similar to the 29 LX) in the works. That would be cool if it happens. The only SSB out right now are the ( export) conversions or the (legal) Uniden 980SSB and a couple Galaxy models (979, 949, and 959) plus the Galaxy DX2547 base.
Recommending one depends on how you plan to use it, ie; base or mobile installation, etc.

I read where Cobra's not going to replace the 148 with another ssb radio...

I have a Uniden President McKinley that has ssb plus weather bands...Best little radio I have bought in years...

Easy to mount in the Dash! (2001 Tacoma)... I have mine hooked up to a external speaker, but the radio really doesn't need it, the front firing speaker on the radio is plenty loud and clear (reminds me of a BOSE speaker, huge magnet on back of it) but I already had the external speaker hooked-up from a previous instal, so I just left it.

I like the new anytone radios my self. I bought a at6666 and love it. I agree with Jessejamesdallas on this one in place of the 148 radio. price is about the same . the Mckinley looks very nice also. if it is any thing like the st6666 I would buy one of them.

I also like the AT6666...main reason tho I went with the McKinley over the 6666 was the size...The McKinley is DEN sized so it will fit just about anywhere a car stereo will fit...If I was just going to do a under-dash mount or mount in a console or something then I might have went with the 6666,,,have herd nothing but good reviews on that radio.

I bought he at6666 at a good price used and like it very well also. seems that all of the ssb anytone radios are very good and stable.
I like the looks of the Mckinley also and as you said jessejamesdallas it is a smaller radio with a lot of power too.

I love the President McKinley. Great little radio and I have it in
the shack to use as a Base station.

Lots of used 148's on ebay, an occasionally one still new in the box.

I have a Uniden 980SSB - bought a factory refurb. and had the seller bump up the modulation a little bit. Very happy with it so far.

Are there frequency mods for the McKinley? I looked but did not find any.
