Guidance for a setup

Post by CornbreadUSMC »

Hello everyone, Thanks for the add!!
I am new and tried reading up on some of the older forums. I would like guidance on the following if you could provide input. I have a jeep wrangler that I’m wanting to get a CB for, my main concern is the following: I will need something to reach out especially when I go out in the desert and mountains. I’m hoping to always have someone else with me but I’d rather be prepared when I’m out than not.

I was told to look at the Stryker 447 HPC2, again my main concern is the reach on it and the ability to talk with another CB i.e. cobra 29LX etc. when I’m on a ride together and get all the other CB channels.
Plus, when I drive cross country back and forth to my work location and home.

Any guidance would be great, plus if anyone knows who does professional installs in the KY or Cincinnati A.O. I’d be appreciative. I’m trying to get this completed while I’m home, thanks.

• My current vehicle: 2017 Jeep Rubicon 2 door hardtop 6 speed

• Possible Antenna Placement will be off the back-tire area, but please advise any past experience and thoughts?

• Antenna: at this time, I’m wide open to what is the better setup

• One like would be the possibility to get weather or emergency notices if possible

welcome Marine, first, any idea what your budget is? or your upper limit?

your antenna placement is a good idea, or go for a puck mount on the roof.

most of the newer radios come with NOAA weather built in mow.

Snowman 308,

My upper limit for the CB is around $240.00 or the price I looked up for the Stryker 447 HP. That is my top end for sure, as I know I need to ensure I get a good antenna etc.

i would suggest a drive down to GI Joes, couple hours south of cincy , they are a sponser here.

the radio you picked out is a 10 meter ham radio , if you didnt know that all ready.

my pick for a new setup would be a cobra or a uniden, with a good after market mic, and either a 102 whip antenna off the back of your jeep, or maybe a K40 magnet mount. i dont know if your jeep has a metal roof or not.

P.S. im just getting back into radios myself, hopefully someone else will chime in with other options.

P.S.S. dont buy your radio from a truck stop, because you will still need a peak and tune done on it, and most truckstops or electronic stores dont have techs working there.

I have a 2015 Sahara, my problem is the XYL won't let me install a radio and antenna, I do have plans for one when she gives in. Because room is a premium inside the Jeep I already have the radio, an Anytone AT-6666.

Personally I don't care for weather (for weather I use my phone's app) or any toys in my radio, this radio is small and has SSB. For the antenna mount, I plan to use the windshield frame light mount on the drivers side,

You could even run dual antennas using them if you want. The tire mount would be okay as well but the radiation pattern tends to look toward the front of the vehicle and would be harder to tune the antenna. Using the frame mount will give you a more omni-directional pattern.
As for antenna, anything over 4ft long, shorter drops the bandwidth drastically. I like the Everhardt brand but they are getting hard to find, a good store for them is;
