Max-2000 mast building

#395623

Post by 765hillbilly »

Working on a build plan for setting up my first base station. Hoping for some guidance on how high I can go without guide wires. My house in 15’ top of roof to ground and I drew up a plan with sinking 2’ in concrete and getting the base of the antenna 36’ from ground level which I’ve read is the height you want to be at puts the total pipe mast 19’ feet above the roof with an overall height above roofline at 43’ with antenna mind you I plan on using 1-1/2 galvanized pipe for the mast

200 feet
The answer to General Class question G1B01, “What is the maximum height above ground to which an antenna structure may be erected without requiring notification to the FAA and registration with the FCC, provided it is not at or near a public use airport?” is “C. 200 feet.”Aug 7, 2014

this is what i was able to find
Keep smiling ...It makes people wonder what your up too !

How about local laws, Village ordinance. Might want to check that out also. 200 ft seems high for a residential area. And wouldn't that put your guide wires in your neighbors yard. :)

Ya I’m not looking to go 200 feet up just trying to figure out if what I’m planning on building is to tall to run without guide wires

I would think Yes, being that high and all. I'm in a kind of the same situation. In a HOA, In the spring i will be putting my patriot in the back. Going to cement a old lamp base in to a 5 gallon bucket. And attach my mast to that. Mine will be up about 20 ft to the tip. But, maybe it will be a little higher. I'll find out in the spring if it will need wires or not. Which i really don't have to room for. I can let you know how it goes for me.

You want to guy it, the 2000 is prone to breaking at the base and top connection when it gets to whipping in the wind. I have lost three of them due to that. Also be sure to wrap an ugly balun for it!!!! They are bad about RF coming back down the coax. The 2000 kind of acts like an end fed antenna the way its fed at the base.

You really only want to run one section without support. So if you have two sections attached to the house you can run one above it. I am speaking about antenna mast pipe.

So with two feet in the ground that would put one 10’ section above the house with 3’ of another so 13’ total pipe above rove line but would the antenna preform good at that height?

Your ideal minimum height over ground is 1/4 wavelength to the base of the antenna. So 9 feet, any more over this is just a bonus. Height makes a huge difference for local talking so if that's what you are looking for then shoot for the highest. 15+13 is 28 feet, that's almost one wavelength so its will perform good for all talking, DX and local. I think you will be golden with that. Dont forget about the ugly balun!!!!!

Also, the pipe I am talking about is antenna mast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are using heavier pipe everything I said does NOT apply. If you are using water pipe I dont have any advice on that. The heights I talk about are OK to reference.

Okay, that was going to be my question to you,, 10ft sections of pipe as the mast. A Imax-2000 doesn't has a lot of wind load so going 8 or 9ft above the closest mounting bracket would probably be okay without guy lines. I would recommend the a mounting bracket be on both sides of the pipe coupling to add some strength to it, the couplings are the weak link. Do you know the thickness. I have been using aluminum electrical conduit.

If I sink 2 feet in the ground it would leave 13 feet above the mounting bracket at the peak of the roof and schedule 40 pipe is what I was looking at using

What you are using sounds fine but like I said the weak link on pipe is the coupling area, the thread cutting thins out that part of the pipe.

@eyecue, thank you for that info, could come in handy one day.
