Direct injection is using some type of studio audio equipment and wiring it in the audio section of the radio, possibly eliminating it's audio section all together. Some say they are doing a "Hi Fi" mod and just hook up things at the stock mic jack, to me that is just adding a power mic.

Direct injection is when you feed audio directly to the balanced modulator. Because all of the transceiver's audio processing (gain/compression/limiting) is bypassed, a broadcast style audio chain is used.

A mixer is needed if you want two or more inputs, or if you do not have a mic preamp you can use a mixer as a mic pre amp. Most mixers have some minimal EQ'ing like Hi, Mid, and Low which is nice. Just as important as audio chain is the RF chain. Most guys who get into the HiFi game can get past the whole "swing thing", meaning low as possible dead key and slam the carrier to show as many watts as possible. If you are going for pure and beautiful audio, attempting to exceed 100% modulation will quickly trash that audio with distortion and also quickly narrow your audio bandwidth. Keeping to a 4 to 1 ratio is a must. For example, if your carrier is 2 watts, you would shoot for around 8 watts PEP with audio added. There are many ways to go about it and even different ways other than direct inject that incorporate asymmetry. If you are interested, do as much reading as you can from reputable sources. I could go on and on here but I think I'd quickly bore you!

Also you need to open up the audio chain's width such as 4khz to 6khz wide

Seems like a lot of work also. But if it's the same as getting a good echo mic. Well i already have a Superstar DM-1000 Power/Echo mic. But i do see some benefits, although slight as they may be. It does look really cool. But i also have other things to spend my money on. So...will see.
