My most recent purchase was a stryker sr -497hpc. Wasn't sure how I was gonna like it coming from a connex 4600 turbo, but I'm really impressed with it so far. I think it actually sounds better than my connex, the lighted faceplate is a plus also.
Have run the connex in a rock truck for about 8 years before I started to have trouble with it. If this stryker does that good, I'll be tickled to death.

I just acquired a "busted" BK 2040 CB signal generator last week, and fixed it. Couple of soldier joints, a 1496 modulator/demodulator chip, an electrolytic capacitor, and a LM324 quad op-amp chip were bad. Yep, Did some recapping too.
Three days of troubleshooting and skull-scratching.... A-OK!
The MC1496 chip was the issue with the PLL Board, and a 47Mfd Tantalum (C376) was shorted to ground too.
The LM324 was the issue with the Audio board. With the same board I found that a few cracked foil runs in the 2.5Khz oscillator, and a few bad soldier joints on the modulation amplitude POT to the board.
Waiting for several Electrolytic caps to recap the power supply which is located on the Audio board. C1, C2, C3, C9, and C10. Will be doing this for good measure.
Thanks for reading,
Cliff

The Uniden 980 IS a fine radio..... do not drop it. It is delicate... otherwise a kick-rump unit!!

After recapping SEVERAL Tantalum capacitors supplying voltages to the chips on BOTH the PLL board and the audio board. Voltages came up and CW was restored. Also the power supply electrolytic caps were replaced too. Seems to run like new.
Tantalum capacitors are migraines…. always be suspicious of them when your are troubleshooting any component! Thank you YAMAHA
*HINT* When replacing any DIP chips.... ALWAYS install a socket for it to plug into. Saves hassles later.

<t>Picked these up for free. A Montgomery Ward 680 and a Radio Shack handheld frequency counter. For those unfamiliar with the 680, what control is missing on the front panel? They installed this control in the mic. The handheld freq counter works awesome and in great shape. Still had some old leaky batteries in but very nice.</t>

I picked something up on a whim today......
The real person responsible for me EVER getting interested in CB was my father-in-law. I married his daughter back in late 1974 and after Christmas I moved her to another city so I could go to college. On one of the first few visits home....he had gone bonkers over it. He had Teaberry 23 Channel Tube base and his choice of a Starduster or a PDL-2 Quad with one of the Astatic lollipop mikes with an interesting fish hook under one of the head screws that gave him a "ping" sound when he keyed up.
What I really remember is his mobile in the truck. He had a Royce 1-600 with a Turner JM+2/U power mic. He was on that thing left and right, all the time. His interest died down in the early part of the 80s ... pretty much when the craze went away from the masses. We lost him to cancer in 1995.
Just nosing around today, I found a Royce just exactly like his on "NON SPONSOR" for "not too much money". They were unable to test it and as such sold it "AS-IS". I hauled up a schematic and looked it over...... an easy radio to fix if something was wrong.... so I bit. $28 by Paypal and it is on it's way. Already ordered the Sams Info on it as well. I'd really like to get that in top shape... just to remember him. I know it isn't his....but every time I see one... I think of him.

Well, I guess I should post my new stuff. tIs a week old tomorrow, I got another Yaesu FT991A and a LDG AT1000 Pro2 to go along with it for the house station, got the exact same in the shop. Also about 3 weeks ago I got the Yaesu FT891 as well. Should make a good rig for camping and a back up, got the LDG AT200 Pro for that one, wont be running an amp so it will be plenty of tuner for it.

Haven't been into CBs in a LONG time... but I did pick up a couple of these a couple of years ago.
One was new and I figured out how to get uppers/lowers on it. The other was used on e-bay.
Great radio... so far I guess

After 25 or so years in the hobby, I had no CB in my car because it was small. I was chatting with the CB guy I used to buy from all the time, and he introduced me to the new President line. I bought a President Bill FCC. Fit nicely in the car, and has some great features. It gets good reports on the air. Is it as good as my Uniden Grant XL? Hell no, but at least I have a rig in my Honda Civic.
