My base set up

#397703

Post by Sierra379 »

My base station setup is a Uniden Grant XL on a Palomar Elite Line TX 2250 amplifier, two separate Pyramid power supplies. I can talk skip all day long on this and occasionally I will swap out to my General Lee. I never thought it would work but my antenna is a Wilson Trucker 5000 mounted to my tv antenna tower using the tv antenna as a ground plane it’s approx 35 feet up. It works but I am looking for a more permanent antenna. Please send me your thoughts and suggestions.

Cheers and 73s

You didn't mention a budget. How much are you looking to spend. If you wanna stay on the lower end. zamboni had some nice suggestions. Or on the higher side, you could go with some kind of a beam. I live in a HOA, so mine is a homemade dipole in the attic.

Dont forget the 102" whip. I have used one for years, and still do. It really is indestructable.

Was looking at the 102 with a ground plane kit. I get a lot of lightning here in the summer and have heard fiberglass will attract lightning.

By the time you buy one of the fiberglass antenna's then add the cost of the ground plane kit you are up to the price of a good "Real" ground plane antenna. The Maco (5/8 models) are fine antenna, so are some the the Sirio brand, HyGain came back out a few years ago with the "Penetrator" model, these run around $150 USD. There are a few high priced versions that are built like tanks to take any abuse mother nature can toss at them. Try searching 5/8 wave ground plane antennas and see what might catch your eye.
BTW, don't forget about checking the sponsor's sites here on the forum for the best price.
