antenna for metal roofed house
We bought a bare cabin style building with a metal roof, its 16x50..putting it on 10 acre in east Texas. I broke out the old Cobra 142GTL and D-104 and am looking to get back on the air shortly. I have been told that having a Metal Roof..that I need to get the Antenna as for away from the cabin as possible..! Is this true of false? Can I run a Long Wire inside the cabin..or that Firestik IBA5 indoor antenna..or put up a alum antenna up outside??
I need some feedback on antennas(been out of Radios for some time)and I'm Not up on thats good of bad out there these days. Living on Social Security does nor leave me alot of money for my old hobby..and like everyone else..I'm looking for the biggest Bang for the Buck! All/Any opinions will be very helpful. Thank You. Respects. (Old **Censored** in East Texas)

I live in a mobile home and the rf coming off the trailer is awful. Ive found that you have to be at least 10ft above the roof to get a good match. I tried a indoor dipole (long wire ) but i could not get a good swr match
Keep smiling ...It makes people wonder what your up too !

I have a 30X50 all metal garage and my maco V5/8 works just great about 8 foot above the roof. get a 1.2 SWR and talk all over the place.

Best to get a antenna with a ground plane like sonoma said, placed above the roof line or higher will do the best for performance and range.

Would a magnetic antenna do any good? I would think with a 16x50 ground plane it would work great.

RUDY: I was thinking about the same thing.. a magnet mount type antenna stuck on my metal roof..(maybe something like a 102 in ss whip) and use the cabins metal roof as its ground(sounds like it would work to me)
but I was told that it will not work! Or either..I'll stick with the 102 whip idea and use one as the Driver and the other as the Counterpoise, Horz, about 30 feet up! Give me your feedback on that one. Respects.

If you are going the 102" whip route you could fashion a bracket out of the joist plate Home Depot sells and secure it to the roof. I would check to see that the roofing has continuity from one panel to the next.

I was thinking of using a 102" whip in my situation also. I live in a two story townhouse which I installed a metal roof after the last hailstorm fiasco several years ago. I have a 10' x 10' flat section above the ridgeline that I plan to use a tri-mag mount to hold the whip with. I will add some weights to help in high winds during the bad weather (do not want to drill holes). I plan to ground at the window entry point thru a lightning arrestor on coax to a separate ground rod with 10 gauge wire. I do not have a HOA restriction but I want to be as inconspicuous as possible to the neighborhood. I would appreciate any thoughts or input also on my plan. I am not out to powerhouse transmit just catch some traffic off the interstate and hopefully hear some skip??
