After seeing a few posts with references to check out 88 radio for the 503,I did. I saw this one (703) and thought, why not? Any comments? I know I'll get the usual, 'that much power is not needed'. I run thru Houston a lot, home of big radios. Mud Ducks don't stand much of a chance to be heard. Im a trucker, I don't have a 30 plus foot antenna in the air. I am new to using anything but barefoot radios, peaked or not. Just ordered an Anytone at6666 from Walmart being shipped via DNJ to replace my 980, so looking at high drives. The Hornets, Dave Made, etc. Are much more pricey. Any other suggestions? I looked for an elite that was mentioned in another post, but can't find any new ones online. Would like to have SSB and a preamp on the unit.

Why didn't you just order the radio direct from DNJ, wouldn't have the middleman then. If you would have said your a member here, he probably would have got a better deal. As for the 703, they are heftier than the 503, you'll need to tune down the Anytone so as not to overdrive it, remember these are mosfet transistors known not to take a lot of abuse. I hope the electronics in your truck are up for the stray RF flying around the cab. I'd take some time to read up on grounding/bonding.

Came across the radio on a Google search, had some room on the Wally card.
I've heard varying stories on splatter. One reason I've held off on an amp. With you mentioning it again, my apprehension is returning. Definitely more research to come.
