AD-203 Stinger Board

I saw a mod that makes this board swing about 130 watts pep on AM. Is that for real ? I think buying one.

You would look at getting just less than 100 watts in most radios. I think it a nice little unit, not too hard to install, works well in most AM radios, never tried it in a SSB yet.

Thanks ! :icon_e_smile: I guess 100 watts is OK for me here at home.

Be sure you upgrade the power cord to the back of your radio too. You need extra capacity to feed the ad200.

Hi guys, Finish installing my AD-203 on a empty amp case I found. Works great. You know if you cut R2 you get 50 watts DK and 145 watts swing only with 4 wats DK from my Galaxy radios.

Hi, it sounds great. Nice audio reports. I installed a switch between one leg of R2 to where the leg was on the board and you can switch for low to high. Low power is 30 to 50 watts and high power 60 to 150 watts.

The coax that comes from the SO-239 to the Stinger is RG-58/U center conductor. The one that comes with this board is junk. :icon_e_sad:

That's a nice looking install, and the price they are at dnj radios is nice. Got me thinking of buying two putting em in one case throw in some homemade splitter and combiners, and you got a cheap 200 watt amp

You successfully removed the regulated bias voltage from the gates of the final amplifier transistors

Don't MOSFETs need that bias in order to work?

Look at the schematic when the external bias is removed by cutting R2 it will then be self biased which will be achieved by the rf drive and the associated components going to the gates of the final amplifier transistors.

Only problem is what unknown class of amplification that will be if it's the wrong class for linear amplification it can cause the amplifier to be unlinear and cause spurious and harmonic emissions.

Components are put in an electronic circuit for a purpose.

What was the final decision, is it a viable mod. or is it best to leave it alone??

Hey elbuho…………… I'm very interested in your AD 203 modification, how has it worked out for you?? I'm hoping it worked fine as I have 4 of them that would really be sweet with that little mod.

Dont do that MOD, DONT CUT R2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOD's are not good when they talk about removing the bias or making SWING. Get a power mic if you want to see swing or get a bigger amp if you want more power. The board is likely OK to install as many have done that.

By removing the external bias will there be any detrimental effects on the 4 mosfet's even though they will be self biased by the rf drive and associated components feeding them, or is it a problem with spurious emissions? This has really stirred my interest now!!

I believe R2 regulates voltage to the mosfets, by clipping it you allow unregulated voltage, this will let them (the mosfets) increase output and self destruct in no time. The AD-203 is nothing more than a KL-203 without a case, plus it doesn't have a proper heatsink.

I dont think you understand how bias works. Study the circuit, you will get it. Think of a water spigot.
