Re: Galaxy 66
Cut the wire located at J15 and put a 5-10k pot in line. That should allow you
enough variability to find the level you prefer.

My radio has nothing in JP15 only a white wire that runs from one hole to the front of the radio

Re: Galaxy 66
Hmm, I was never into the toys they put in the Galaxy radios but I'll give it a shot.
J15 only controls the ON/OFF of the talkback and only when the "echo" is on. Definitely the wrong place to look.

Now instead of a 470ohm resistor try a 1K potentiometer, (more than 1K will make the volume way too low), using 1K, the normal volume should be center knob.Talkback Mod
Talkback can become distorted if these radios have been "peaked," and there is no cure because the talkback just amplifies what goes to the RF section. Try adding a 470k ohm resistor from junction of C154/R207 to the junction of C187/R235 on the solder side of the board. This will also give you clean talkback on SSB and FM. Try different values of resistance to get the amount of volume you want. The less the resistance the louder the talkback will be.

Re: Galaxy 66
you have not tried every thing as of yet. if you will think back a few years ago I showed you how to install a relay to add talkback that was variable in a 2950 radio. it will be the same in this radio. it gave you variable plus very clear talkback. so do that to this one also.

Re: Galaxy 66
I do not have the info any more since I lost my hard drive a few months ago. I will try to see if I saved it in my notes. if I remember right it needs a double throw single pole relay. about a 470mf electrolytic cap a variable control and you may need to put a resister in line to calm it down. not normally needed.you have to solder the pos leg of the cap to the mirror board and clip the audio lead at the back of the board to splice it to the relay and kill the audio on TX. need to put the relay to 12 volts to power the relay when you key the radio. .
I this is almost all the info you need to do the mod. also Handy Andy did a real nice drawing for you and posted it. I know I just did a pencil drawing. so you should have both drawings.

Re: Galaxy 66
I went to my one drive account and the folder is empty. I never save the drawing for myself since it was so easy to do. just cut the speaker trace or there is a jumper under the 2sc827 am chip and you can cut that jumper to splice into the audio feed. you just have to cut the speaker feed and tie the one side of the relay to the speaker feed off the mirror board to feed the audio to the speaker when you are talking into the mic you get the talkback.I get the 12 volts to activate the relay off the audio chip. get the 12 volts off the chip when you key the radio to activate the relay. when you unkey the relay will go back to complete the speaker circuit. if you will think about it you can do the mod after you do one radio.

Re: Galaxy 66
that is the drawing that Handy Andy did for me. see if I can explain it some. will not include numbers here but you should be able to follow.
the variable goes in line with where you hook up to the mirror board. solder the pos lead of the cap to the mirror board location. then solder the pot to it. then run a wire to the lead of the relay that is active when you key up the radio. you have one lead of the relay that is the common lead that feeds the speaker. the other 2 leads one is connected when the radio is unkeyed to complete the speaker function. the other lead the cap and variable are connected to so you have talkback when you key the radio. the jumper you can clip or remove is J3 so you do not have to cut a trace.
so see if you can figure this out now.

Re: Galaxy 66
I am glad you found the drawing on the mod that Andy did. for some reason when I moved it to one drive the drawing did not go with it and got lost. at least I have it again.

Re: Galaxy 66
you will need to disable the stock talkback that is hooked to the echo circuit also or you will have a problem with both going on at the same time.
let me know how you are doing with it, just remember the single common pin goes to the rear of the radio and the other lead off the relay for the feed into the relay goes to the front hole. if you look at the drawing it explains every thing you need to know to hook it up. this is one of the clearest talkback mods I ever used.
