New RCI 2950CD mods needed and help with Galaxy 2517

Have a new RCI 2950CD with SMD board. Ordered from **Non Sponsor**. Has e-chip installed and someone spread coils inside. Reports of low modulation and when turned to low, it only swings about 2 watts PEP (2w DK swing to 3.5-4w). Anyone have and tricks to make this thing get up. Added Diode and 100ohm resistor to board for swing, but still only swings about 4 watts PEP and still reports of tight modulation.
The 2517 does well for about 5 min and then modulation drops and modulation and output power meter needles barely move. Does fine for another 5-10min after sitting. What should I check or change. All help appreciated

It sounds to me that the radio was modded by someone that didn't quite know what they were doing, spreading coils only makes the radios show "false wattage", I'm surprised it is working at all. Since it is new, box it up and send it back with a note telling them to fix it right. As for the 2517, that sounds like the voltage regulator section needs rebuilding, caps are dying causing the problem.

If I’d known that 2950cd was like that from the place I can’t name, I would have never ordered it. They told me it was under warranty and that if I needed to send it off, they would set it up for me. It’s brand new. I shouldn’t have to send for warranty work. They had a seal that said warranty void if removed. It had been peeled half way so they could get to the screw to open it. I know the put the e-chip in it to get all the bands. They had one a little chePer that didn’t have it. I don’t think you can move jumpers around or anything on these. Have to get that E-Chip installed. Goes from 24.**** to 32.**** MHz if I remember correctly.

I haven't seen a 2950 brand new SMD/SMT board yet, but the last few older models I know came with the e-chip already installed and these shops were charging customers to do it. It is possible the new boards are just a couple of jumper moves. Who did the diode and resistor mod? If you are trying to drop the wattage to run an amp that is definitely not the way to do it, choking off the voltage to the final (most likely a mosfet now) will only make the radio sound terrible.

I did a diode and resistor mod to get it to swing more than a watt and half. It got it to swing from 2-10 instead o 2w-3w. Lol how did you know about the diode and resistor? Or did I mention that. Anyway, it was terrible. Modulation was tight and low. I turned the mod pot up but it was fully open already. I had to do something to get it to sound normal. Also, I see a lot of pics with the buttons backlit green. I could have sworn they were on when I first tried it. I sent a message to the seller and they said they hooked up a new one and the buttons aren’t backlit.

I’m gonna send it to a shop in Glasgow, KY. He said he’d take care of it. I’d rather pay than send for warranty work and wait 3 weeks. He has a big shop that I probably can’t name on here, but in 35yrs, I’ve never got a “new” radio that was this bad. It’s my sons Christmas present.

Actually I’d been looking for help on Facebook pages about the radio and if that other sellers quoted output. I was shown to put that resistor and diode in to help it. Prob not best option, but it did help some. I can take it off in a few seconds. But I sure can’t figure why those coils were spread and nothing else was added. I think when they added the e-chip, it’s doing something to it. I read on it and it said to be very careful when installing. Even found videos of techs fixing them because e-chip had grounded or burned something out by sloppy work.

A E-chip is nothing more than a cap, diode, and resistor needed to make the circuit work when the radio is switched to that band, nothing there that could cause, unless it was made wrong at the factory (possible) or was tampered with by the installer. Spreading coils is a way a "shady" tech makes a radio look like it is making "boo coo" watts (was real big trick with cobra radios) but in reality all he did was mess up the alignment.
I would take a lot you see on videos with a grain of salt, there are quite a few that love to see people destroy their equipment as you found out doing a mod that doesn't work.

Hey fellas here is the truth........I also purchased a 2950cd from the big cb store in Ky and when it came and I opened it and seen the coils were spread I called them and gave them a piece of my mind.........they told me to call ranger and talk to them about it and they gave me Rangers service dept. number so I called and left my name and number. Low and behold the next day a service tech named John called me and he told me that yes indeed they now spread the coils to try and achieve equal power output on the all the bands because that is what the people wanted. I kid you not this is the gods truth...........I had to humble myself and call the cb store in Ky and apologize to the lady I laid my frustrations on.

So.......if your getting close to 30 watts pep on am and SSB like I am with decent audio running a Astatic 575-m6 then be happy with that as it is still an awesome radio for the money.
