Uniden 980 display failing

Display on my Uniden is slowly starting to fail. Everything is becoming dimmer and some segments are no longer easily visible like the SWR Calibration indicator etc. Any fix or threads dealing with this? I know this is not an uncommon problem. Only into this radio for 65 bucks but get very good reports and am otherwise happy with it. Called Uniden and they want 58 bucks and a 4 week or more turn around,,,,,yuck. Any help or thoughts, links to this subject would be great.

That actually doesn't sound like a bad deal plus the shipping to and from, a new radio would be the only other choice to me.

I may go that route but was hoping there was a fix at home.

I don't know anything on the display board that is serviceable, make sure the ribbon between the display and main board is seated completely (be careful, it is fragile) and the other 2 connectors are pushed in tight.
