What forward gain and front to back ratio can you live with?

If you are building one from scratch you can use a manufactured antenna measurement details. Look on CB Tricks at the antenna manuals for specs.

Here's a shot in the dark. 27.2 Mhz: forward gain 11.5dbi, F/B ratio 15.2db, vertical take off angle 25deg, 27deg beam width, longest element 18 feet, 9 foot boom length, no matching scheme required at the feedpoint.

You could look into building a Moxon. Best bang for the buck for a small beam antenna.
