Who has ever used the PA facility on a CB rig, and why?

#402966

Post by JimboBowie »

It's always amused me that CB manufacturers still persist in providing a PA facility. Did anyone ever use the PA facility to actually address the public?

Seems to me that the PA/CB switch is probably the most repurposed switch on rigs.

When I was about 10 years old I used the P.A. to growl and bark like a dog and scared the daylights out of a lady walking down the street. Other than that I have never used it.

I still have the PA horn in the grill of my pickup but the radio I have now doesn't support it. I could hook it up to the external speaker to listen while out of the vehicle but been thinking maybe a yelping siren would be better to have.

Which radio is that? I note that even the newest models of the famous old and popular brands are still proving the PA function -- which strikes me as anachronistic.

Yes, to test whether the audio IC was faulty.
Sometimes it amazes me when someone uses the NB or ANL switch for extras instead of the PA switch. They must like the sound of their own voice or something.

When i was a youngster in the time of 8 track tapes, the Six Million Dollar Man, Bicycles that resembled motorcycles, Saturday Morning Cartoons, "Real" studio wrestling, etc. The PA function on the cb radio was used for children and adults, who have not yet outgrown being juvenile" to "Moo" at cows in the pasture as you ride by. So when driving by you "Moo" on the PA and the cow will either run away or run toward you. I always remember this, because on my dad's Robyn the PA was a switch on the front. On his Royce the PA was between 1 and 23 on the channel dial. Its amazing the things that make memories for children.

Also back in the trilling days of yesteryear. The PA function and the "Dixie" noise toy will give you the horn from the General Lee. I just picked up a Midland 13-882c

has the EXT CB function. It will broadcast the received signal through the PA Speaker. I believe if I remember the specs correctly it and a Cobra 29 have 4 watts audio output to the speaker and pa jack. Just looking at NOS PA Horns to install in the vehicle so my 6 y/o and 11 y/o can "Moo" at cows. I live in a rural area south of Pittsburgh. "Moo" at passing cows has not yet been objected to by PETA.

Yep. Back in around 1977 with my first CB (JC Penney Pinto 23) I had a 5" or so horn-speaker under the hood. Just used it to goof off. When we got rid of the car.....I never put it in another.

JimboBowie: Repurposed after the ANL & NB switches switches of course. My PA was always used (again, in the pre-mod days...) to scare the beejeezus out of anyone I knew walking in front of my vehicle. And watching them return from orbit on the verge of needing CPR.

Furthermore, yanking on my 5th amendment for the sheer number of stock switches used and added protruding from the US version 148GTL test bed I still own. (up/dn channel, 4PDT FM with power boost, single to triple ping, 3PDT xtal switch with relay VCO detuner, etc.) now needing #6 side screws to keep it all together.

I just installed a Cobra 29 with a pa speaker in my 19 year old daughter’s truck and she uses it to harass her friends at the local hangout. She also drives through neighborhoods playing ice cream truck music and watches the kids come outside looking for the ice cream man.

Now that is cruel, especially with the kids not being in school.Been thinking of getting this off eBay,

I hog hunt with dogs. The PA is very helpful in calling the dogs back to the truck when they get too far away to hear me yelling for them.
