President radio's hidden menu?

#399957

Post by Kobo »

Greetings.

in watching reviews on some of the newer President radios namely the Bill FCC, The reviews have mentioned a hidden menu allowing them to make some modifications to these radios that have no adjustment points on the board. Has anyone found the process to access this menu?

TIA

Yes, it is, and I have seen this video, However, what I did not see, along with those who commented on it, is how to access the menu. Perhaps there is something there I missed?

Thanx for the quick reply

It looks like you push the "Roger" and the "CB/WX alert" at the same time to get into the menu on the USA model.

Just a follow up, I found a new comment on the site where I originally found the video linked above. FWIW:

The service menu is accessed by holding down the PTT, CB/WX Alert, and EMG buttons and then turning on the power switch. With a stock radio, the service menu displays two parameters; PL and AL. PL is power and AL is audio. Larger values for PL increase carrier power and smaller values of AL increase modulation. If you have modified the radio per this link: [Please login or register to view this link] then the service menu displays four parameters PM, PL, AM, and AL. In this service menu, PM is carrier power and AM is modulation. PL and AL do nothing. With the modification given in the link, about 8 watts of carrier is possible. The audio driver is insufficient to drive 8 watts of carrier into good modulation levels. So it is better to adjust the carrier to a lower value which will allow modulation levels around 90% to 95%"

I dont have one of these radios yet to try. I'm looking at getting one for when we're using either the wifes car or traveling and using a rental.

Delboy's review and "tear down" really gives you a great overall look at this new product and features.. Kudos to the review...

Good Morning ALL.
I see this is an older forum from 2019.
I am curious has anyone tried this modification?
I own a president Bill FCC. I have not tried to modify it. Probably won’t.
I have discovered that there are at least two versions of this radio.
1.) President Bill FCC (US FCC approved)
2.) President Bill EU (European Version)
If you look closely at the circuitry between the versions you will see that it is different.
The FCC version has circuitry for WX which includes an Inductor (coil), the EU version does not have this circuitry and instead of the Inductor it shows a symbol (drawing) of where it should be
To me it would appear that the mod is being performed on the EU version of the president bill.

I've never tried it, neither radio would be in my collection, I like SSB radios only.

I just received the President Bill FCC a few weeks ago. I did this modification. Out of the box the dead key was slightly over 3 watts. I raised the PL to the highest setting (145), and it raised it only to 4 watts. I switched the AL to 60. Didn't do much, and wasn't really worth it for a very small gain.

Hat's off to giving your idea a test run. Many inventions and improvements come from giving an idea a test run. Appears to have been a great learning experience.
