Re: Uniden Bearcat 980SSB
Hi there Flshooter. I also use a Bearcat 980ssb. I run a Palomar 225 x2 HG 1446 transistors. My radio is turned down to 1 watt am and 10 watt ssb.
Being cautious buddy turn that Bearcat down to 1-1.5 watt. Radio will run cool and amp will smile too.
I used same setting for a Kl-203 as well. Hope this helps

Buy an amp that can take your radios full power and never worry about hooking up a full power radio.

Like Grinder said. That radio is not a powerhouse to begin with, even tuned to the max it's not going to hurt a decent amplifier, I'm not saying the cheapest RM Italy model but it would do well with a 500(+) models will be fine with the stock output, any of the new mosfet "High Drive's" would do fine.
Just make sure all the rest of the system is good, SWR, (that includes traveling down the road at speed with the antenna bent over) the battery and alternator can handle the extra drain, etc.
