Advice on a Johnson Viking 4740

#407323

Post by Dad0850 »

I have an old Johnson Viking 4740 40 channel side band that I wanted to set up as a base. However, it does not power up. Do you think it might be worth investing in to have it checked out? Or, should I put it back on the shelf?

I had one for years, it power up but does have problems. One of these days I'll check it out again or send it out. If your radio is not blowing the fuse when turned on I'd look starting at the back power connection toward the on/ff volume switch, could just be dirty contacts.

hold on, let me get my 4740 off the shelf, everybody get theirs dug out and we can work on all them together.ahh yes this is nice looking, with ssb too, now i got to find the mic, old style din 5pin with a center pin, mounted off the back end of the radio, thats probably where my problem was,
i will dust it off and give it a jolt,
i know there are several members with these radios.

OK, you spurred me! I went down to the garage and I pulled the fuse out again. It appeared to be intact, but on the off chance I decided to put in a different fuse and it lit up!! YAY!!!

Cool, keep an eye on the microphone jack, the little plastic rivets sometime break because of age and will short out the audio section in the radio. I had replaced the one on mine with nylon screws and nuts. Good luck and keep it talking.

Always loved the Johnson Viking, mine was an 18 channel and not working, nothing was left to chance with the full and might I ad, expensive rebuild. The base console is as rare as rocking horse **Censored** and easily converted to 240v

I am going to check out my console and take my radio to an electronic tech who has been working on CB radios for a long time and is said to be one of the best in the area. I hope all goes well.

I just checked mine, MDYoungblood. It already has plastic screws in the microphone jack!

Just for my own information I plugged in my console and tested the output with my multi tester and it is putting out 14.14 volts. Now I just need to call my local CB radio expert to test the radios!

I have the original microphone but the cord is super stiff, will probably snap if pulled. They are very quiet receive. The 455kc crystal filter from a parts radio (4740) was used in my RCI Ranger 2995DX, made it super quiet on receive as well, this was not a plug and play, was some work involved.

I just repaired one of those. It powered up but had hardly any volume, and no transmit. Bought the cap kit from Klondike Mike and then it had volume and received. Had to replace a dead crystal and the AM regulator to get it to transmit. After a complete alignment it works like new.
