Ranger TR-696FD1 dead key question

#406638

Post by Welder7668 »

I just purchased a Ranger tr-696fd1 and was trying to see about turning up the power on it without installing an amp. I found that the pot labeled Vr14 is the AM power. I turned it up and when I dead key it, it reads 10w now. I believe it was reading around 4w before. Is a 10w dead key too much or is it better with 4 w. I dont know anything about turning a radio lol. Thanks.

Not sure if you have the mobile or the base radio but the PCB are the same, the base is limited to the internal PS.
You have it turned up too much, you need to leave a little breathing room for the finals to modulate up. Turn it back to 4w DK and turn VR16 (AMC) up to the stop then back off a touch, do the same with VR17 (SSB ALC). Don't touch and other potentiometers in the radio or you can mess it up to where it will have to be aligned at a shop.
BTW, any mod that can be done to the Galaxy 949/959DX models can be done to it, same PCB. Look through the forum, there are years of advice about these radios.

Ok thank you. It's a mobile radio. All stock. I did turn the VR16 all the way up for modulation I was reading about. I'll back it off a touch. I'll adjust the alc ssb. I was reading that SLC SSB was VR13. I didn't touch any others in there. Dont want to mess it up. I just adjusted VR13, VR14 and VR16 as the gentleman described. he has a you tube video on it as well.

They are nice radios, I have the all chrome case version. It has a good final transistor (2SC1969) and if I remember a 2SC2166 for the driver. Your right, VR13 is the SSB ALC, VR17 is the APC. Here are the pots,

“VR” Tuning & Alignment Components:

AM Power VR14
AMC (AM modulation) VR16
SSB ALC (Sideband mod) VR13
SSB APC (Sideband power) VR17
SSB Carrier Balance VR6
RF Meter Adj. VR9
S Meter Adj. (AM) VR1
S Meter Adj. (SSB) VR2
Squelch Threshold Adj. (AM) VR4
Squelch Threshold Adj. (SSB) VR3

Sweet! Thanks for that info! A big help right there. So you think a 4w dead key is good or do I need to go lower. I dont know what a good deal key watt is without messing up the radio.

Stock with the modulation peaked, 4w would be fine. If you ever plan to add some external wattage than you can always turn it down to 2w DK. I used mine for years at the stock output and shot all kinds of skip with it.

It is the same board as the Galaxy 959dx. Only has a couple differences, no RB, and a 6 digit frequency display. Other than that the tune up specs are the same.

The older board, 2166 driver and 1969 final. They do well with the dual final mod if you can find good (real) 1969’s.
