Need info about Turner CS-1 Custom Special mic
Does anyone have any information about the Turner CS-1 Custom Special desk mic. I bought one off of Ebay and I can't find any information or specifications on it. I only found that it was a brother mic to the Turner +3. I want to know if it has a ceramic head or a dynamic head. Also any other info on the sound quality and any specs. I have a Turner +3B as well and love that mic. I know the Turner's have superb audio quality and are a good bang for their buck.

I heard that Turner also made a CS-3 Custom Special mic. I haven't been able to locate one nor find any information on them. I did find that the Turner CS-1 was custom made for a Johnson Messenger 50th anniversary base station CB. I just tested the CS-1 and it is similar to the Turner +3B. The biggest difference is that the +3B has quite a bit more modulation with the speech compression. I can run the CS-1 at almost 3 quarters volume and it sounds just like the +3B at the half volume level. I am pretty certain that the head is ceramic because they sound very similar in sound. The +3B has way more modulation. I don't think that the CS-1 has speech compression but I could be wrong. All and all the CS-1 is a very nice microphone in it's rarity. I recommend them.

Hey I know this is a really old post, but I do know that the Custom Special was made specifically for E.F. Johnson. They came on, or were an option for their radios back in the good old days.... But as far as the CS-3, im not real sure...cant help ya with that one. Hopefully you still use this forum, as I noticed this is an old post.

I'm not so sure they were necessarily for Johnson specifically as the color doesn't really match and Turner was already making Jonson branded desk mics for Johnson that were a darker brown/copper color. But I've heard that said about the Johnson connection many times and my NOS CS-3 did come wired with the Johnson/Tram mic connector. I have both model Custom Specials including an in the box CS-3. They are six wire mics and feel that's the big difference in them from other models at that time. They use a ceramic element IIRC. Don't quote me on the ceramic element as I'm not %100 sure about that. I need to check and make sure. I use my CS-1 frequently on my Lafayette tube radios.

I know this is a little old but I have a resolution for the Turner CS-1 microphone wiring. This link will provide you all the information you need for wiring the microphone to a host of CB radios.

I saw one "NIB" at the last hamfest I attended, seller wanted 3 Benjamin's for it,, I walked away. It had a special amplifier and was one of the first 6 wire base microphones made.
