DIY advice

Post by RenegadeBird01 »

I recently purchased a 1977 teaberry titan t cb radio. Seems to be in extremely nice condition. Came with the factory mic and a hardwire harnesses which I finally took the time to wire into my vehicle. It turns on and seems to receive ok, not great but ok. Assuming it’s because it needs a service from sitting for 30 some years. I’m assuming it transmits as the needle drops and the red light comes on. The only problem I see is that when it’s turned on the needle goes 1/4 of the way to the right and I can’t get the squelch to work. The noise blanker switch seems to work so it’s just the squelch. Is this something I should/could fix myself or should I try and find a shop that takes mail ins

1/4 needle , hmmm, when your modulating does the red light flicker more the louder you modulate?
try to find a nearby buddy listening and verify yours is working.
may also be some weak internals bleeding voltage or spurious signal.
use it awhile and see if it gets worse. then a true radio shop is your best bet.
keep us posted how it goes.

Red light stays solid when transmitting. I took the mic apart when I got it but the contacts are all sealed inside. I did repair down at the end where it goes into the radio. It’s a 4 pin but apparently it’s different than my astatic mic because if I plug it in the sound plays through the mic when the button is depressed instead of the cb speaker. My closest cb shop is almost 2 hours away as well

Probably needs to be freshened up, invest in a can of DeoxIt spray, Amazon or eBay, don’t use any of those automotive contact cleaners as they may eat away the chrome or lettering, even melt some plastics.

Well I actually ended up taking into DTB radio in Carlisle and having him look at it. He doesn’t understand what’s going on with it. Apparently the squelch circuit is basically operating in reverse and isn’t kicking on. He checked all the controllers and board and resisters and couldn’t find anything wrong with any of those. I’ll probably take it back in at some point and let it with him to fix since I don’t have any of the meters to read anything unless anybody has any better ideas or wants something challenging to mess with lol

Dave of DTB is a good tech, a little cranky at times, probably because of being overworked, he gets a lot of local business. His place is about a 2 hr drive for me from where I’m at now, will be closer when I move to PA.

I’ve never had a problem using D5, you do have to use it sparingly, not soak the controls down or you’ll be waiting forever for it to dissipate. A can of air helps as does a heat gun set on low.
