RF Gain knob sensitive

Post by cdj85 »

I have a uniden pc78

and when the rf gain knob is all the way down and I turn it up, the needle doesn't do anything until about 3/4 of the way and then it jumps from 0 to 9 in a very short period, about 5-10 degrees. Audio volume tracks with the needle. Is this normal or a faulty unit or is that how the unidens are? I also have a cobra 29 and it was smooth all the way through and I am able to actually tune it easily. It's a pain when it keeps jumping around but that's due to the noise from the truck when it's running.

@cdj85 welcome to the CBRT family.
I would try turning off the DSC control on that radio.
If that dosent help then it might be a dirty or bad knob for the RF gain.
This is just a guess as I dont have the radio in hand to play with it or look inside of it to see if anything is burnt !!

I've only had the radio a month and it did it from the start. I don't believe it has the dsc on the pl78ltx. If it does, I don't know how to use it...
I wonder if that would be something accepted for a warranty repair.

You said it was a pc78 and that model has a DSC control
It may be under warranty if you bought it from an authorized Uniden seller otherwise you may have problems
That model also has the DSC feature so try turning it off and see what happens
