squealing general lee
squealing general lee
i just received my new general lee and im having a problem with it. it worked good for the first night i used it in the truck, but when i got in the truck the next day all i get is squealing whenever i key the mic. i used my other radio to see whats up and IT doesnt squeal. so i know its not my texas ranger speaker, or estatic mic. i was told its a standing wave problem? the radio is wired directly to the battery, and thats it , dont know what would make it do that. the sqeal is coming out of the ext speaker, and it stops or tones down when i turn the mic gain down, but it has to be turned down to about a 1.4 way which is too quiet on the other end. i have a wilson 5000 im using.
IF YOU ARE RUNNING AN ASTATIC 636L MIC THEN YOU CAN HAVE THE MIC GAIN TURNED ALL THE WAY UP & TALKBACK ON THAT'S THEY I RUN MINE BUT IF YOU ARE USING AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER EXTERNAL SPEAKER EITHER TURN IT OFF OR TURN TALKBACK OFF. YOU ALSO MAY NEED TO TURN MIC GAIN BACK AS BIGBOPPER SAID. TRY THESE THINGS AND YOU WILL BE IN GOOD SHAPE
STICKMAN
When you Supp up a General Lee the TB will feedback all the time with the mic gain up, I have a Sparkified General Lee, and can only run the mic gain about 11 Oclock with the SkyThumper ST-65DX Noise Cancelling Mic,,,its a trade off, loud radio, with limited TB or a weak audio radio and use the talkback,,,Talkback was only put in most radios so you can adjust the echo,,,,eventhough I do run it alot
Yep. Talkback is really only intended for setting your echo and then turning it off.
I can have my mic gain wide open with my SWP G. Lee and 636L. If I turn talkback on and hold the mic close to the radio, it will squeel. If I move the mic away from the radio, it will gradually go away. Try that and see what happens.

Can you fire the external speaker into something that will not reflect sound back into the mic? If the speaker "sees" the face of the mic, the mic sends the received sound, back to the speaker, and round and round it goes. My mic gain does well at 3-4 O'clock.
I fire my Ranger speaker into the back of my cloth seat and I am able to run the optional variable talkback wide open...
Experiment with a couple of speaker locations. Create a cloth or carpeted surface to "fire" your speaker into.
By the way, if you have the opportunity, RA put variable talkback into my SWP General Lee and I love it! The knob's on the back.

I ran into this problem with my General Lee, and My Galaxy 93t.
Way I solved the problem, was a two way deal.
First, I got a RK56 mic, which helped a bunch, but if the mic gain was turned up too far, it would still squeal.
Next, I took a trip over to CB City, in Tyler TX. And me and one of the sales people literally went through just about every external speaker they sold, till we found one that wouldn't squeal.
One I ended up with wasn't one of the more expensive ones either. But would handle 30w's. (think that was right) It was made by Spark-O-matic, which is by no means a High-Dollar Speaker. But it sounded like one.
I also have a Ranger external speaker in my Suburban, which also doesn't squeal...
Now that being said, another option, IF you like the General Lee...You may think about the next time your looking for a new radio, check out the Stryker 440HP.
I just got one of these radios, and it's real similar to the General Lee, but has the Best Talk-back feature of any radio I have ever had, or even herd of! It's simply aw-some! It also seems to have a better noise canceling capability than the General Lee, I still have some motor noise coming in, but not as bad as it was with my General Lee.
But back to your problem. Try a Road king 56, and a higher watt external speaker.

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
I had to take my RCI speaker and lay it face down in the passenger seat to keep it from squealing with the TB on. Works fine with power on low but on high or with the fireplace going just forget it. I now have learned to keep it off since I have my echo set. Just light the fireplace and slap ducks nothing like a SWP General Lee with a Dave Built all from Radio Active.......
Not having talkback would bum me out. I'm glad that I inquired about the variable talkback when I ordered my SWP General Lee.
This is the first radio I've ever owned with talkback. I am able to run it wide open because I have the external speaker behind the cloth seat.
I am seeing that the General Lee, without the variable option for talkback would be an aggrevation.
