102" whip?

Would i be able to use a 102 inch whip for a base antenna mounted on my roof somehow? if it is possible how would i set up a ground plane?

It might easily have ground plane problems.

An NGP (No Ground Plane) antenna may be an option, or an antenna like the Antron 99, A-99. Could work.

Forum member "Choirboy" tried a few antennas, in a NGP application, and finally had luck with the A-99.

i figured a ground plane would be a problem I dont to spend that much money on a a99, could get a friends 102 little cheaper. so i thought i would see if it would work. thanks STBR

Most likely you will have to provide ground radials--at least one 9 footer across the roof or several buried underground surrounding the pole(?) it is mounted on. If it is on a mobile home or metal building, it would probably work..............................IF! :D That means that it might need to be matched with a small coil or capacitor at the base (feedpoint) of the antenna. There's a a lot of variables, and it can be made to work. You would just have to have a bit of understanding about how antennas work.
The thing is, that whip is NOT the whole antenna. When it is installed on a car or truck, the car body becomes the other half. If you take that half away, you have to do something to replace it. :D So the thing to do would be to TRY it and see what happens! If you remember that other "half" you just might succeed!

Hi:
You could use your 102" Whip with Radials.
The Radials have to be 104" Inches Long,use at least 4 Radials to create a ground plane to your whip.(Some installations got away with 3).
Now the radials can be made of 14 Gauge Household Wire insulated or bare wire,also you could use regular galvanized wire same gauge.
At the end of the Radials you need to use some kind of insulated material,a piece of plastic or 1/2"Inch. PVC Coupler work,then use any kind of string rope to attach the wires down.
Atach the center of your coax cable to the insulated part of your antenna base and the 4 wires to any of the other bolts holding the antenna along with the shield of your coax.
Made shure if you use 4 Wires to space then 90 Degrees apart from each other and they have to be about 45 Degrees down.
If you have problems with the SWR,change the 45 Degrees Angle to more Angle.
I Build many antennas like this for friends that could not afford a Base Antenna or just got starter in CB Radio.
Just as a note,do not expect this antenna system to preform like a regular base antenna,it will preform like a regular mobile,talking distance can be around 5 to 10 miles or more,even sometimes if conditions are good you could shoot skip!!!

***Censored***' site has these pictures (see link) of some of the commercially available antennas. You can see that some of them include "grounding radials" that should give you an idea what they might look like. A-99's aren't that expensive. If you look good, you can get one for 50 - 60 bucks.

It can be done.. but question is why waste your time. A base antenna is going to do so much more for you. I say go with a Solarcon I-Max 2000, you can get one at GI Joes, for only $84.95. Use the below link...
