Echo Etiquette, when to echo, and when to not?

#45071

Post by SmallTruckBigRadio »

Around Louisville Kentucky, I am finding that to talk with the mobiles on channel 19, I need to turn up the echo to get people to talk, and on channels 6, 11, 17, and 23 (base stations) I have to turn the echo off to get them to talk to me.

I have also learned that my FATBOY 1X3 bleeds into the PC speakers pretty badly, so when I get home from work, before I turn the truck off, I crank up the echo, and say Daddy's home! 8)

i think that to much echo is just annoying, but a little echo does sound nice

Agree with animal.

Straight no echo is "ok" but everybodys voice needs a little something.

But way to much sounds even worse.

Ive got my echo both knobs turned only 1/4 the way on.. so the 9:00 position roughly

Drivers with too much echo on a big radio is my biggest gripe out on the road. I really didn't care for it too much. In fact, I never really wanted an echo board in my radio. HOWEVER, so many people told me I really needed the connex board to compliment my soon to be arriving Fat Boy that I made the switch. It does sound a TON better, but like the other members above, about 1/4 is all I need.

I have noticed that also if you dont have it set down to a minimun people around here on 19 hate it but if its set righht they love it.
What a touchy matter on some echo.
As long as you can squish ducks thats al that matters

I run live audio setups and we use reverb, echo, plus a few other goodies to fill out a voice and make it stand out. I believe in echo but only enough to bring out the best in the voice. Too much and you cant hear whats being said, distorted. Not enough and the voice is flat, plain. I have found that talk back is useless to test with. Only way it will work good it to have someone else on your radio to test and adjust with you listening on another station to listen in and call back the adjustment till you get it the way you want it.

Hmmm,
That's a good one. I didn't realize the talkback was much different than what the receiving end hears.

Ive ran a watergate in the house while checking the echo in the mobile and the other way around.

Or had someone else say if it sounded good or not but everybody likes differant amounts so its a hard world to please.

Oh yes. I found that out only minutes after installing my echo.

Very few things on the radio annoy me more than someone overmodulating and running a ton of crappy echo. I only use mine for sound effects if Im goofing off or something. A little bit sounds OK, but too much actually makes you unreadable in the distance. I always laugh if I hear someone in the distance crank up their mic gain and echo to try to reach further..... the only thing they accomplish is making themselves harder to understand with the noise level.........
Channel 32, or sometimes 33 and or 34......
