Channels
One thing nobody mentioned. If you are buying one of the "10 Meter 'Amateur' radios", be careful that you don't end up IN the 10 Meter band! :D That area, from which the "export radios obtain their names, is reserved AND used by licensed "ham" radio operators. You would need that license to transmit there. Below 28 MHZ, it is not quite as likely that anyone will notice you, but it is a different story above. Let me explain.BigEd1314 wrote:ok, thanks guys. I wasn't sure. i was thinking about maybe getting one here sometime in the near future, and just wanted to make sure that it would still do regular CB channels, plus the others.

Part of the 10 Meter band is reserved (by international treaty) for Morse Code and digital modes like teletype. This makes it appear that nobody is "talking" there between 28.000 and 28.300 MHZ when, in fact, if you are hearing "beep-beep" or "brrrrrrrrrr-up"sounds, the hams ARE "talking" just not in the way you might be used to. :D I don't mean any harm by telling you this, it's just that if you don't know about this, well, you just don't know. The hams tend to get a bit upset when they find
unlicensed operators on their bands---especially when they, themselves, are not allowed to use voice in that area. (28.000 to 28.300)
A lot of the "10 Meter" radios, tho illegal, will cover well into the 28 MHZ area, so you would want to be careful.

Gadfly,
yep, i know all about 10 meters. i am a ham, and really, right now what I am wanting to do is experiment with CB. Right now I'm at college and don't have any of my HF stuff because its too big, and i have no where for an antenna, and a mobile setup...i don't have any mobile HF radios. i have the Icom-756 original, and its just way to big for mobile. But anyways, me and some buddies up here use Cb's when we ride around or go off roading and I use it on my way home. Since I live in an area with lots of mountains, i figured on days I go off roading and we stop for a while, i could try for DX on CB, and with the "freeband" channels, that would give me more options for that. But, everyone i talk to that has a CB has a regular 40 channel, so I'd still like to be able to talk to them. But, thanks for pointing that out, yeah its illegal to talk on 10 meters without a license. Sometimes if you listen to 10 during a band opening, they'll be talking about the non licensed users. so... But thanks again for pointing that out. 73

Good deal! :D I do think this is funny, since you are also licensed. Recently, a metals company's driver got caught talking on 10 Meters. That does happen these days. It turns out that the OWNER of the company is a ham, and when he got that dreaded letter he was FURIOUS!!!!! He didn't know his drivers were doing that! :D Can you imagine the conversation that took place when the driver got in there? According to some friends in certain places, the owner read the riot act to ALL his drivers, made them get RID of all "export" radios in the trucks, and threatened to FIRE anyone that got caught with one of those (censored) radios in a company vehicle. It was kinda funny depending on one's point of view, not so funny if you are the one that gets caught using one of those rigs.
